So, if you ride a bike, you probably know those assholes who appear often while you are riding a bike- the ones that go up to make a right turn, and block those white lines... and for those sidewalk-riders, the ones who block the sidewalk by parking terribly in their driveway. STOP! Tell me, who are the other assholes do you meet on your daily ride?

We give cyclists a bad rap here. Yeah there are idiots but most drivers are idiots. The driver idiots are however surrounded by a metal cage while cyclists have a thin tech tee protecting them. Cyclists can’t afford any self error.
The roads are ours just as much as they’re yours. How am I to make left turns if the bike lane is on the far right?

I commute mostly interstate, so I rarely see bikes. But on the surface streets near the wealthier parts of town, you do get whole pelotons of the “rich hobbyist cyclists” who, IMHO, are the worst. Usually men about 40 years old (I resemble that...) on multi-thousand dollar machines, spandex jerseys opened in the front to show off their shaved chests and heart rate monitors.
Their sheer numbers make them think they can take up a whole lane on the road, plus they’re just riding for sport and not for transportation.
If I actually see a downtown bike commuter, I’m in awe and will show them the same respect as a pedestrian (naturally), but I still expect them to follow traffic laws. Our city just recently installed pay-per-hour bikes, which is pretty cool. Most people won’t bring their own bikes downtown, but once you’re here it’s a great way to get around.
Oh, and if someone is riding a fixie, I try to run them over. That’s my only exception. :D

Bus drivers.
They've had the brilliant idea here to put bus routes and bike lanes on the same secondary roads. I get that they want us out of the commuter traffic on the larger roads but if I encounter one, we just end up leapfrogging while they stop every 3 blocks. It's really hard for buses to see bikes (especially when buses are driven by the willfully ignorant) and it's terrifying.

Well, I live in Kansas City, where cyclists are the nicest people on earth, but drivers don’t care about cyclists at all. The drivers in KC are excellent, but texting and driving is a huge problem. I have witnesses 3 rear-endings, this morning a Hummer retard ran a red light, it’s terrible. One of those rear-ending was on a cop, by a minivan, and the other 2 involved 3 cars. Terrible wrecks.

Well, there are rules of the road that many don’t realize. If a cyclist is going to make a left turn, they can go into the left land, or the left part of the lane. Also, cars cannot cut across the bike lane unless making a right turn quickly. A car cannot be within 3 feet of a cyclist, read up on the rules somewhere. It is astonishing how many rules cars break.

I would love to ride my bike in London *with a face mask*. It seems like all drivers are nicer to cyclists. Where I am from, the drivers just hate cyclists. Law says that cyclists have all the rules to the road as cars, but cars are treating cyclists as racist whites are treating minorities.

My school is under construction, building a new something, and lots of semi trucks ( or lorries, if you are british ) go by. Unluckily, the roads are too busy and the sidewalks are right next to the road. Whenever a semi passes within 5 feet of me ( which is all the time ) I shit my pants. Fortunately I don’t witness many wrecks though I do agree that texting/taking selfies/social media while driving is the number one stupid act committed by drivers. Unfortunately here a lot of the cyclists think they’re cars, ie 5pm traffic, 4 lane road, 35mph, cyclist going ten in the right lane with a perfectly open sidewalk. I mean, I have the common courtesy to move and give them the lane on a country or non busy road, I wish the riders around here would do the same.

But, sadly, many people think the opposite. It’s hard to ride anywhere without being yelled at, saying “Get on the sidewalk, asshole!” or “Get out of my way! Yer supposed to be on the street!”

Obviously bikes don’t do as much damage to road surface, but if they paid even a small bit, or at bare minimum had to take a course and pass it, it would go a long way in my mind.

One night right around the corner from my house, some idiot had parked their car in the bike lane. A little less than four minutes after I got home, around 1am or so my room mate and I heard a huge crash and approaching sirens. We run outside to see some drunk in a pickup, running from the cops, came out of the intersection a little wide - hit the car parked in the bike lane - and flipped their truck.
Somebody learned not to park in the bike lane, and a drunk driver got caught, everybody’s a winner right? ¯\(°_o)/¯

Also, if you run into an asshole on a bicycle while in a car, the absolute worst that could happen is a dented panel, which is replaced easily enough. If you’re on a bicycle, and you run into an asshole in a car, you could literally die an agonizing death.
In any case, search ‘road tax cyclists’ and you’ll find a whole host of arguments why your idea cannot be taken seriously. You could start here: http://ipayroadtax.com

If the cyclist has as much right to the road as you. If the traffic at 5PM really is going at 35mph, then it should be possible to pass the cyclist.
If the traffic is at proper gridlock, the cyclists will be going at the same speed as car traffic, while taking up much less space.
If you really cared, you would advocate bike lanes, as they take up less space than car lanes, resulting in more space for everyone.
If you really were making a coherent argument, you wouldn’t try to get cyclists on the sidewalk, because the sidewalk is for walking and usually not suited for any rolling traffic, and also usually full of walking people. Which are slow, unpredictable and don’t ever look around.

I would be surprised if a 25lbs bicycle could do any damage to a road in the first place. In fact they’d probably be happier if most of that expensive infrastructure
required for motor traffic
- not bikes - just went away. That’s not to mention that a chunk of the roads is paid for by everybody regardless of whether or not they own a vehicle of any sort, so even the guy who doesn’t own a car does in fact pay something into it.
I would agree though that bicycle safety should be taught to everybody - I mean it used to be something kids learned in school, so what happened?

I grew up in a medium sized suburb that’s not very bikable. It’s to spread out, and little bike infrastructure exists.
The only bikers I encounter there are hobbyists who often ride in groups, take up road space that doesn't exist, and generally think they’re more important than they actually are. I hate them.
After living in a larger and denser college town, though, where many people bike, I kind of get the appeal. It’s just the most convenient way to get around this place.
I’m still not getting one one, though. I have a bad history with bicycles...

I meant the speed limit is 35 mph, not the flow of traffic. If people have to slow to 10-15 mph then merge, it has effects on traffic. Ever been through a one lane construction zone?
As I said, the inconvenience for a cyclist to temporarily move out of the way for cars is much less than the inconvenience caused by being stubborn and continuing on. Common courtesy says to let people by, hence why there’s laws here stating if x amount of vehicles stack up behind you on a country road, you must pull over so they may pass.

The Racer - A random joe on a mountain bike or fixie that has to show me how much faster he is than me on my road bike. Cutting me off, jumping and riding erratically and dangerously. Normally I just wait for a safe spot to pass and do a little sprint practice (25 to 50 MPH in 10-15 seconds ;))
The car that needs to be ahead - The jackass who’s willing to hit you to be ahead. Not worth a fight, even a stop I’ve had them attempt to hit me. Easier to let them go or waive down an officer.
Mr No Lights - They cost 5$ and save your life. If you have them turn them on as the sun starts to go down please so I can actually see you (while cycling).
The Yap - Road cyclist who has a $20k bike, a Sky Kit and always has to wear an aero helmet on a road or TT bike... you’re training bud... yet he can’t seem to actually ride... All talk, no walk.
Music McGee
- Just no. If you’re on a closed circuit go for it, but music while riding on public streets, paths, tracks is dangerous. Only have one bud in? Try closing an eye.
Free loader - I’m a big guy (6ft 3 with a built upper frame) so yes I’m probably best draft you’ll ever find but please don’t hop on my tire without asking or at least take a turn from time to time.
Daddy and Toddlers
- Don’t take your toddlers onto public roads or bike paths at peak hour. They can’t stay in a line let alone swerve back and forth across both sides. It’s dangerous for everyone involved and there are safer places for your child.

First off, I’m about 3700 lbs, plus driver, passengers, and cargo.
Second, I was simply making a point that large groups of casual riders taking up entire lanes of car traffic during commute times are dicks. People actually using their bikes to go to work and school are generally not. I differentiate the two the same way I differentiate people writing checks in the express lane at the grocery store vs people going through lines normally and orderly.

I could talk for days about cycling on public roads. Honkers are common, but I’ve even had a siren blipped directly behind me. It was from a personal vehicle, probably a volunteer fireman. I never found it. I’ve been screamed at and complimented. I’ve had stuff thrown at me. I almost hit a deer. One of my worst wrecks was trying to avoid crashing into a pedestrian who didn’t look before stepping into the bike lane. Scratch that, one of my worst wrecks I’ve had involved me on my bike, my friends on skateboards, and a parked car. Wait, scratch that. My worst wreck was when I hit the dog. That one bent the frame on my cheapo commuter bike and sent me to the hospital.
I’ve ridden on everything from two lane rural roads to six lane highways.
I’ve been hit twice, both times when I was in a bike lane. One driver tried to use the bike lane to turn right, the other tried to use the bike lane to pass traffic sitting in the primary lane.
I’ve had many near misses. Most were from left turners trying to get across the road before I got there. A few have been from people passing me, then trying to turn right. One actually yelled at me to slow down so she could turn in front of me.
It’s pretty common for drivers to use their vehicles to show their displeasure. Guys in trucks or on Harleys like to stomp the gas as they pass just so I can hear their loud exhaust. Rolling coal takes on a whole new meaning when the exhaust is near your face and you are trying to maintain pace.
The most contentious fellow I’ve met caught up with me at a light, pulled in behind me (I had the lane) and started honking. When I ignored him, he squeezed his truck between me and the parked cars and started screaming at me to get off the road. After offering to take it over to the sheriff’s office which was less than a block away, he decided that he would leave me alone.
Although riding on the street can be hazardous, the times when I felt most vulnerable were when I was surrounded by other cyclists commuting to campus. They all travel at different speeds, they all want to be first at the light (and will push their way to the front of the group to get there), and they are almost as unpredictable as pedestrians.
The one universal truth I have found is that people, whether in cars, on bikes, or on foot, suck.

Think of every cyclist as a tractor with a slow-vehicle sign on the back. Perhaps this shift in perception will help you get over your anger.
It takes MUCH less effort for a driver to step on the gas and get back up to speed once past a cyclist. Hindering you for a minute or two will have much less of an effect on your commute than constantly stopping will have on the cyclists’ commute.

I was going 15 mph or so at the time, and my shoulder, both elbows, hip, 2 spots in my face ( very close to my right eye, and chin ) both knees, and ankle had gotten punctured by the gear. I think I am The Good Rider . I love people, but not if they hate me or are blocking bike lanes or sidewalks. I have hit 40 mph before, I have 3 lights, very bright, and my bike costs around $1000. Custom.

I’ve had chain derailments many times, fortunately most were when I was mountain biking.
It did happen once when I was trying to accelerate across an intersection when the light turned green. I had some minor road rash, but the worst thing hurt was my pride. Dumping yourself over the bars in the middle of an intersection is extremely embarrassing.

“Make no mistake, I’m all for cycling.”
From what you have written so far, that is most definitely NOT how you come across.

Right, so people can only do their sport whenever you feel it is best. How’s your planned economy going?

Maybe so, just because I’m all for people doing something doesn’t mean I have to advocate for it, nor does it mean I think it shouldn’t be regulated better. You all make it seem like I said ban cycling, which is absolutely rediculous.

Have you ever heard of common courtesy? That’s what’s at issue here — not pedantic laws or infrastructure that do (or don’t) protect cyclists.
If you’re not using social heuristics in your daily life, you’re wasting a lot of time and brainpower. I mean, at the start of this thread, you had already made up your mind that I was anti-cyclist, despite my clear differentiation. I also differentiate car drivers based on their behavior, and in a far more granular manner than riders. But that’s beside the point.

I rarely ride (I really need to change that). I don’t live in a very bike friendly area, unless you like to trail ride, we do have lots of that. But I don’t see a lot of bikes on the road. There used to be a local dude that I’d see all the time riding his mountain bike with a leaf blower motor hooked up to it ... but he got himself run over by a freight train last year :(

I know many cyclists. Some even do it professionally. Several of them have been hit more than once because of inattentive drivers.
On the flip side: everyone I know including the previously mentioned cyclists have numerous stories about other cyclists causing problems. The big problem is we have a ton of students that either don't know or don't care about the laws making problems. I've nearly been taken out by cyclists many times on the sidewalk (illegal to bike ok sidewalks here) for example. Not to ignore the stop sign and red light runners

You make yourself sound like cycling should be banned.
“ If youre impeding car traffic, what the road was built for and what pays the taxes on it, its common sense to move out of the way for a bit, until it’s efficient to resume on the road.”
“I know I know, butttt, if I own one car can I just drive whatever car I want down the road? Not quite, each individual vehicle must pay it’s own way.”
“I’m sorry but until you have to register and license/insure your bike you can’t complain about these minor transgressions. You gotta pay to play and I run into a lot more assholes on bikes from my car than I do cars on my bike.”

“I know I know, butttt, if I own one car can I just drive whatever car I want down the road? Not quite, each individual vehicle must pay it’s own way.”
It is a common misconception that vehicle and gas taxes pay for roads and that cyclists, who most drivers assume do not pay those taxes, are using those roads without paying. There is also an assumption that bicycles contribute to the wear and tear on a road. This is false .
I work for an engineering firm. Our engineers use the average daily expected gross vehicle weight per axle to design roads and determine how long they should last. The impact of a car is 20 times higher than a cyclist (~200 lbs vs. ~4,000 lbs). The impact of a car is 20 times less than a loaded truck. You would need at least 400 cyclists all riding together in one big pack to equal the wear and tear of one loaded truck.

This is what’s called a knee jerk reaction. I still never said it should be banned, just that certain things should change. I also acknowledged that bicycles put no wear and tear on the road but that’s not why they should have to pay to play, and why they would be paying much much less.
So back to what I’ve been saying the entire time and something you haven’t acknowledged once, what is wrong with bicycles pulling over to let people by once they begin to impede traffic?

I only stated that Shark-Attack was anti cyclists because he came with trite arguments.
I stated that it was wrong of you to consider other cyclists of worthy of your consideration depending on if you like them. You are in a 4000 pound vehicle and capable of infliction terrible harm on a cyclist with just the flick of a wrist. That’s why you don’t get to choose who you give consideration on the road. Because you’ve assumed responsibility of a 4000 pound vehicle. If a cyclist decides to not consider you worthy of his attention, he could very well die. The other way around, the cyclist dies as well. That imbalance in consequence requires you to keep your temper in check.

Since monday, two people on separate occasions have run major multi-lane intersection 4-way stop signs, at their full bicycle speed, regardless of traffic. They barely looked to see if they weren’t going to get run over. They are even worse than idiot jaywalking and obliviously entitled pedestrians. (towns with college campuses are bike and pedestrian traffic nightmares, especially.)
Another occasion, one road rider who absolutely refused to take the shoulder on a hillside no passing zone, at 15 mph on a 55mph highway, with me and 4 other cars waiting behind him... at 15mph. At some places, due to visibility, I was worried that people would start getting rear-ended by full-speed highway traffic being surprised by a slow moving column, and not being able to decelerate quickly enough.
And a guy just the other night, well after dusk, riding on the highway in gray and black clothes, with no lights, and no reflectors. I almost ran him over before I saw him. A car driver would have been pulled over and ticketed by police for not using their marker and headlights in the dark, and it would be a justified ticket.
I see bicyclists being self-important or careless at a much higher per-capita rate than drivers, as if the rules of the road or common sense need not apply to them.
You want to share the road, understand the road, and your place on it... which is not above the rules or common decency. Being at a size and speed disadvantage doesn’t grant bicyclists special purview to disobey the law.

You sure were quick to say you hated runners though, wtf have runners done?
I run without headphones, move to the side of the trail for cyclists that are approaching (who RARELY use the polite “On your left” to pass) and it’s interesting how every runner I see will return a wave or head nod, but 90% of cyclists won’t. I get not waving because handlebars, but a head nod won’t tip you over.
Man I was trying to be chill with the cyclist for once, which by the way, if more cyclists followed the laws like they were supposed to the rest of you wouldn’t get a bad wrap. And by this I mean things like - if you’re riding in an intersection, no you cannot run the red light, and it sure wouldn’t hurt if some more of you would use hand signals to indicate their turns.

I ride my bike when it’s convenient: my city has an outdoor music festival in the summertime, and parking around there is impossible, so I like to bike there. I follow the rules like using bike lanes, stopping at signs/redlights, etc. There are many times where I’ll hop off my bike just to use the crosswalks since they’re more convenient, then hop back into the bike lane once I’m going the direction I need to.
I always give cyclists more room than they need, and generally the ones in my city are very responsible.

When you think about it, it’s stupid. A cyclist getting hit by a car is a lot worse then a pedestrian being hit by a bike.
