Well we know fullsize, FWD sedans are as good as dead. Though most midsize sedans are an inch or two from their bigger brothers, it’s the fact that three-row crossovers are cheaper that’s making these sedans a silly choice. Do you think any of these barges are worth keeping just as they are?

Toyota Avalon, because you aren’t some retired old fogey that drives a Lexus ES. No, you’re a semi-retired go-getter that’s gone and got just close enough to say, “good enough!” Sadly there aren’t a lot of youths in that market other than the people that made Apps at 17 and are now 30 and ready to retire. Wait, what do you mean they’re buying the Lexus instead?!

Hyundai Azera, surprisingly one of the best driving dynamics of any FWD Hyundai. But is that signature taillamp design that no one ever remembers worth the $34,000 base price?

Kinja'd!!!

Kia Cadenza, a very attractive sedan that starts off at $35,000 but can be found at the CarMax across the street for $22,000 and your promotional Mew card you got at the theater when you were twelve. When Buick has a similar car at a lower price, how do you even market your Kia?

Chevrolet Impala, has there been a better looking sedan with a bowtie in the last 30 years? All dressed up and ready for a midday list of small errands. The Impala is so eco friendly that every one of them comes with a no smoking sign on the dash.

Nissan Maxima, the 4DSC with a CVT and a V6 that makes the same power as every other V6 on the market. With every sedan over $30,000 being a sports sedan, is the 4DSC title worth boasting or just embarrassing?

The Ford Taurus, a name plate so strong that Ford broke their, “all sedans shall have F names” scheme in order to replace the Five Hundred with it. But for most of us, if it ain’t the SHO then it’s a NO.

Are any worth keeping or should automakers just toss a V6, “sport-tuned” suspension, and some unique trimming on their midsizers? Personally I wouldn’t mind paying another $1,500 to have a 300hp, fully loaded Altima or Camry. Or how about adding a Fusion ST and RS (with that sweet trick AWD system) for the price range of the Taurus?

In all truthfulness, I think all these big sedans will be replaced with AWD, V6, 4DC styled variants of their midsizers while keeping the same nameplates. Imagine the next Azera or Avalon having the A7 silhouette.

I’ve never understood the point of the Avalon when Toyota has the entire Lexus line up to play the ‘comfortable lux cruiser’ role. I also still don’t get the Hyundai/Kia twins as it just...doesn’t work in their line up.

Most of these just cover the price gap. The midsize sedans start around $22,500 and the premium land yachts start at $38,000. Thus there is a gap between the $34,000 loaded midsize car and the $41,000 you actually end up spending to get a basic premium cruiser. They are space fillers now, nothing more.

that is understandable, but if you’re going to drop 34-41k on a car...does money really factor in as much as it use to?

Truth! One of the rarest cars on the road, even counting the older model (which is surprisingly attractive to me, like an old IS and Genesis put together).

Nope, because you’re right in that sweet spot for German lease specials and decked out crossovers.

It is, but the secks isn’t quite good enough to make me want to change my Facebook status. Maybe because I like the Murano more.
