Fuck people who decide that their time is more important than everyone else’s, so they drive up the shoulder to jump some of the traffic. Fuck those people.

Yes, and fuck the people who get over into the onramp speed up/merge lanes just to skip 1 or 2 cars before nearly killing people to get back over!

Funny you mentioned this, on Monday while everyone is lined up in bumper to bumper traffic on an exit ramp some asshole in an Accord Coupe comes racing up my right on shoulder.
He tried to jump in the small gap in front of me and I super blocked him out instantly and threw my hands up in the air like what the fuck are you thinking. I don't try to drive like an asshole but when people do shit like drive on the shoulder I outasshole them.

I saw 3 cars do it today a 2-1 lane merge that always creates a choke point. I wish I could’ve blocked them off.

You’ll hate me for this then...
Last winter I had a fairly anal commute home. It normally takes me 15-20 minutes. I was about halfway home at over an hour. So, I took about a mile on the shoulder to get to the next exit so I could take the service road. I didn’t rush, took it carefully. And shaved at least 25 minutes off the trip.
On certain other subjects coming up (using merge lanes), sorry to piss on everybodies parade, but studies have shown that the more efficient method of merging is not the zipper merge, but rather to push yourself into any available gap (there was an article either here or on jalopnik a little while ago). I’m not really trying to defend my actions on this one. I have done it, but very little—too little to give a damn what you might think.
I have a sort of general rule on this. There are (yes there are) people who have more important places to go than you and who need to go by. There are people who have more important places to be than me and need to go by. If you have the balls (speaking figuratively here ladies) to grab a spot and demonstrate the competence to hold on to it, aka,

then I know you won’t hold me up and I’ll let you in. I don’t care how you got to the place where you need to merge from, you could have been coming from the street the ramp came from, or you could be using it as a passing lane. I’ll let you in if you show that determination and are doing it safely. If you aren’t being safe, I don’t want you in front. If you can’t say “I’m having that space” and commit, I don’t want you in front, you’re just going to hold me up. If I saw you being a dick behind me, I don’t want you in front of me because I don’t trust you not to crash us.
Side note, playing devil’s advocate is fun.

The going up to an exit isn’t as big of a deal. And I know that there are people who actually have important places to be, but most people have “important” places to be. The only situations I can think of where I would consider it justified is if someone was rushing a pregnant or sick person to the hospital (even then should’ve called an ambulance, but not every emergency situation works that way) or you’re rushing home to some sort of family emergency. Essentially, emergencies, true ones, are the exception to the rule. I’m gonna take a stab in the dark here, and assume that the 4 different people I saw driving (most flying) down the shoulder were just frustrated with the traffic and thought that their need to get home and watch the Cubs game, or whatever, was an issue of the utmost importance.
I find it incredibly hard to believe that when we’re in a traffic jam, being caused by a 2-1 lane bottle neck on a freeway, having another car join the merging fray up at the bottleneck is going to make things anymore effective. I’d actually reckon that it’d make it worse.
Sure, it can be done safely and no accidents were caused. It’s almost more the self-righteous nature that accompanies this sort of action that is so frustrating. I’ll give people the benefit of the doubt in isolated cases, because emergencies do sometimes necessitate such actions. However, seeing that many people do it within about 10min is just incredibly annoying.
(And yes, playing devil’s advocate is always fun haha)

Fair enough.
That was my reaction, too... but the article said otherwise. Basically it said everyone be aggressive and the merging happens faster. Gap? Get it. Too big of a gap? Close it. Slow merging happens as much because of a “come on by” attitude as because of multiple people crowding one space. Refer to pic. If you’re going to get in, get in. If you’re going to block me, block me. That just makes a gap behind you and I’m just as happy in that one. Don’t be timid about it, that makes two gaps, neither big enough to get into and both too big to make efficient use of the road.
Again, fair enough. If I had that many people merging in front of me that were dodging the traffic with the merge lane I’d get pissed too. But then again I wouldn’t have that many merging in front of me, because I’d when people merge in front of me I keep that gap closed. There might be room for 1-2 cars. I’m not backing off to make another gap. Tbh, the ones that back off every time someone merges in front of them and create a big enough gap that another person merges in front of them piss me off more than the “cheaters”. I guess you just give more fucks than me. :)

I wasn’t even at the merge point, so I couldn’t do anything about it. I was a ways back, watching these people jump at least a 1/4 mile of traffic.
