Say you have $20,000-ish to spend on any one car for nice weather DD use. The car can be any car, new or used. If you go the kit car route it must be able to be completely built within a year. And for vintage, it must run and drive and be relatively reliable. What would you get?
For me, I’m thinking either build a Factory 5 daytona. Or potentially a slightly used FiST. Both should be able to be done for around $20,000.

I’d probably build a Monster Miata, fun enough for DD and with 20k to use you can make one hell of a track weapon too.

I mean, seriously. 352, so it’s got nearly the power of the 390 without some of the weight, it’s hands down the best year - okay, it’s a three speed, but it’s stick! and it’s a two-door while not being impossible to carry extra people with. Oh, and motha-f’ing convertible.

Either that or a Honda HR-V

Can I just spend $20k On my current car for repairs and restoration? Cause that’s what I would want..

Land Rover Series III 109,
Diesel engine (okay so not the fasted out there but still) so you get decent mileage and maintenance is simple and cheap.
Roof is removable and you can buy a canvas roof for the summer, has a truck bed so you can haul stuff for the house if you want.
With $20k you can put together a very nice toy that you can go play in the woods with OR play on the beach.

This answer is correct. I’ll be playing this game next year, but I think $20K is still a steep budget for it. Perhaps staying under $12K or even leasing a vehicle.
Buy the fun cars, lease the DD. Perhaps i have that backwards

I figured since I already had the 88 and a Ranchero with *kind* of a pickup bed, and since a Galaxie’s trunk is basically a pickup bed...

Yeah, I’m fiending pretty bad for a 109 pickup. It’s the first thing that pops into my head with these kinds of questions.
Actually, it’s the first thing that pops into my head in most situations these days.

Yeah and my dad and I need to pull our fingers out of our arses and get the new chassis for his galvanized so we can finally get the 300Tdi with the R380 in there. You’ll be happy to know that I’ve convinced him to utilize the old levers in engaging diff lock and Hi/Low.

I did that backwards. I leased a BMW 135is which I thought I would drive year round, then bought a ’99 Grand Cherokee for the winter. Then I bought a ’05 Grand Cherokee rather than sink a bunch of money into maintaining the ’99, and now I’m sinking money into maintaining the ’05.
Oh, and since my lease on the BMW ends next June but I’ve stored it the past couple winters, I’m going to try to get the dealer to buy me out of the lease very soon here rather than make lease payments and storage payments all winter just so I can have 3 more months of driving it next year.

Pretty much, yes. Z3 and Z4 M coupes are more valuable than the roadsters. Not sure if the same applies for say, Boxster vs. Cayman.

Definitely applies on the Cayman as well. Probably a $5-6K difference between roadster and coupe variants of the BMW and Porsches <$35K. I know because I was just in that market for the past 3 months before purchasing.

There were a couple of reasons; initial cost, maintenance, ability to DIY. Honestly, it came down to the fact that the Z4M is a unique and seriously bitchin’ car.
I was grinning like a madman while driving the /M, cannot say the same with the 987.1S.

Ultimately it was a decision of what car meets my needs most closely. As a DD, weekend canyon car and 2-3 track days a year the /M is better suited. The Cayman was also a benchmark for my prior FR-S and I was looking for a slightly different experience?
There will be a Pcar in my future, but it seems more like a Boxster Spyder or Carrera GTS (any non-turbo gen).

Since it’ll be a daily driven play-thing, I wouldn’t want it too nice. This TTA for 9k would fit the bill, and then I’d have enough leftover to fix whatever bugged me

I only wish that 110’s were more affordable I prefer having 4 full doors and not having to do that horrible lift the seat to let people/dogs/daily carry stuff in and out.
