Underwriters are notoriously conservative because a Day 1 pop always looks much better than a flat (or down) day. Besides, it’s never easy to get in on a large-scale IPO, so the gains are almost illusory.

The pop is due to UHNW individuals selling their shares for more than they bought them for yesterday, this making an immediate profit (I know you know this, but many don’t understand how IPOs work).
