Pretty much felt like this. I did get to spend an hour with our CEO, in a small group setting, talking leadership. That was cool.

Everything about that smells like a good day.

Started out the day buying a 65 Mustang hood as a retirement gift for our VP of Line Maintenance/director of maintenance (#1 wrench turner), so that was fun too.

What did you learn?
I have met with the CEO of 2 companies I worked for and found it very interesting. These were small meetings so there was a lot of interaction

One of the companies I worked at had a “Breakfast with the CEO” once a month. They selected 7 employees at random. One month I was chosen. In that hour I realized he was so far removed from what’s happening that he shouldn’t even be running the company. Also, I saw so much ass kissing in that hour I wanted to puke.

We had about 20 people there. It was a mix of mentors (me) and mentees.
The main points we hit on were ensuring you have a nimble, non bureaucratic organization, we talked some about finding the sweet spot on how much to spend on projects across the business. This was interesting when you keep in mind we build airport terminals and buy fleets of aircraft. The numbers he was talking were in the billions range. He spent some time talking about trusting your people and building good teams. There was some talk of internal initiatives that I won’t get into here. He did hit on the fact that it is ok to push and fail sometimes. That happens.

Our guy is pretty damn good. Super sharp, knows what is going on internally and externally, good with people and doesn’t put up with BS.

Interesting. I read the article you sent in your reply to E92M3 and I was surprised at how much the company has evolved.

It has been a pretty amazing ride. Not perfect by any stretch, but we have come a long way. It is a very good place to work, at least for someone who does what I do.
Here is an example. Last weekend we reached 185 days this year with zero flights canceled due to maintenance issues. That is over half the year. We fly over 3000 flights a day. That blows my mind. Our cancellation rates on the other days are tiny. United, Southwest and AA are nowhere close to those kind of numbers. Neither can Jet Blue or Virgin. Only ones who are close are Alaska and Hawaiian and we do a bunch of maintenance for them!

Very impressive, especially in light of most airlines cutting back on everything.
That must be a massive facility there in Atlanta. What part of the operations do you work on?

I’m in TechOps. If you ever find yourself coming through ATL and you have time let me know. I like giving tours. tttyyymmm and his family came through and saw the facility.
