My friend, the same mechanically minded guy who’s helping me fix the Z (read: fixing the Z while I watch and occasionally hand him the wrong tool) was servicing his Commodore last night after work, I swung by to watch and learn.

I don’t wrench that often. My experience with fixing cars pretty much stops at the mechanical bits. But working on the Z has lit some sort of fire in me and once he told me he’d be doing things I couldn’t refuse. The chance to take the MR2 out on a nice night sealed the deal.

Yes, the photos are poor. It was dark and there wasn’t a lot of room in the shed. He lives on a big block out in the country, they’ve all manner of stuff lying around. The chickens tend to lay eggs wherever they please. To think this sort of rural stuff is happening so close to where I live, it boggles the mind a bit.

His is a VT Commodore V6 with just over 400,000kms. It’s got the venerable GM Ecotec 3.8 (he informs me that you’re never late in a 3.8) , and while it makes a bit of a drone it can really hussle. I’m ashamed to say I could not lose him in the MR2 on a twisty road. Put it down to his driving as much as anything.

The old Carolla (top pic) is also his, he’s building it to be quite a weapon.

Bonus Kingswood decaying outside. It’s not the only one on their property, though probably 80% of houses in the Australian countryside have a Kingswood in some state of decay.
