So this past spring I purchased my first ever brand new car, and being that I live in New Hampshire I live in constant fear of rust. To help stem the tide of that cancer, which slowly took my beloved FJ60 from me, I’m planning on having the undercarriage treated with Fluid Film. All the research I’ve done on reviews & long term results seems very positive BUT I’d love to hear if any other oppos have gone this route for rust protection and their thoughts on it.

I’m also starting to investigate methods as I spotted my first little ribbon of body rust this last weekend. People swear up and down that POR 15 is the way to go, personally, I am thinking about atomizing gear/motor oil with a sprayer and going that route. Fluid film looks like a good product but it does wash off and needs to be reapplied.

Yeah it’s supposed to be reapplied yearly, which I don’t think I mind doing if it will really help.

From the people on the land cruiser forums that use it they are saying its more like 1-2 times per winter, and about that the rest of the year.

For my money, I’d go with POR-15. It will probably be less expensive both short and long term. Head to Amazon and grab a 6 pack or two of their small 4oz cans. You get a total of 24 ounces and it’s usually only about $0.30 more expensive than a 20 ounce can.
If you plan to apply it yourself, make sure to get nitrile gloves. I went with a TyVek coverall from Amazon as well, very worth the $6. Goggles are great as you will inevitably fling some off the brush into your face (where it will stay for weeks, ask me how I know). Try and get the vehicle on a stand, laying under it for 3+ hours sucks.
There is a cleaner solution and a prep solution, I didn’t use them because I was painting straight onto rust for most of my work and it sticks to rust very well. For painted surfaces or any non-rusted surface you’ll want to prep it, otherwise the POR-15 will shy away from it.
I’m rebuilding a car and a lot of the parts have been coated in this stuff, I just did whatever rust I could find on the under body last weekend. It creates a nice almost glass like surface that I don’t doubt will hold up well. I also did my dd Mazda3 in an effort to stop it from wasting away. I did two coats on both these car, the second heavier coat was applied after the first got tacky. I still have one 4oz can unopened and half of another, so don’t be afraid to really lather is on.
