I’ll tell ya what’s missing- the DSC and ABS lights that have been on since I bought the car!

The problem was a bad reluctor ring that was causing the wheel speed sensor to give the ECU implausible readings. On my car, the ring is built into the wheel bearing. On my car, the wheel bearing is built into the hub assembly. I had to replace the hub.

I should probably look into my intermittent ABS and TSC lights, but hey, it’s been almost a month since mine have come on so I see no reason.

what’s tghe best/worst MPG you’ve gotten?
I’m surprised it doesn’t go all the way to the right at idle, since all cars get 0 mpg when idle!

Probably a wheel speed sensor. If you can get access to a good scantool with a 20-pin BMW connector it’ll tell you which wheel the issue is at.

Nice! 240k, impressive, I sold my last E46 with 202k, lots of life left in that car. At my current rate of travel, however, I won’t hit 240k for 11 more years with my “new” E46 (it’s a proverbial spring chicken at 133k.

Bought at 111k, had the water pump replaced at 112k. I’m losing coolant but can’t seem to find any leaks under the car. I’m thinking the expansion tank is split or one of the radiator hoses is leaking. Either way I need to crawl under it and take the inspection tray off to look. Do not want. It’ll need the transmission serviced again soon too.

Look at the crimping along the radiator seams.

Check the fluid level first. My truck throws an ABS light when the fluid is low. Reminds me that I need to fix that slow leak.

E38 at 192,200 technically over 200,000k since PO didn’t fix abs sensor at 182,000. This gives you hope.

It’s worth it to me. My car has the optional upgraded traction control that can apply brakes to prevent a spin.

2000 528i. Does the button down by the cupholders say ASC or DSC? DSC is the good one.

It’s a vacuum gauge, it reflects throttle position. Ergo, idling produces the same value as cruising along at 50 in fifth gear.

I don’t think you can access the right module through the OBD port, you need the special 20-pin BMW connecter to hook up under the hood. If the problem is the speed sensor, it’ll tell you something like “wheel speed sensor no signal” or “implausible signal”, and will tell you what wheel.
Cheap scantools can only read the engine ECU. There are other ECUs in the car that store codes but can’t be accessed unless you have garage/dealer level equipment.

I didn’t think replacing the hub/bearing assembly was that rough on my e46. slide hammer pops it right off, if the inner race stays on, use a 2 or 3 jaw puller to get that off. Putting it back together is made infinitely easier if you do it while its cold outside and your new hub is at room temp, slides right on thanks to the miracle of thermal expansion.
*note, lack of a slide hammer and/or 2/3 jaw pullers would make this a giant pain in the ass.

On an E39 the bottom of the strut blocks two of the wheel hub bolts from even coming off, let alone getting a socket on them.

Ahhh, that explains it, yours are bolt on, mine is press-fit. Yeah, my wife has bolt on front wheel bearings. I hate them, something is always in the way. Wonder why they changed it up, the e39 front axle doesnt hold that much more weight than an e46 front axle, and its not like its going to fall off the press-fit, the nut that holds it all in place is torqued to over 200 lb-ft then deformed so it cant spin.
