Modified TDI cars..... skewed dyno results?

Lets say some dude buys a 2009-2015 Jetta TDI. The dude then decides to dyno the car to get base line reading before buying a bunch of aftermarket performance parts. Dyno sheet will show an increase in power yes.... but is the power number even higher while driving because of the trick software?

Serious question because I don’t know crap about tuning cars and performance parts.

This has been my biggest question since the start. If we assume chiptuners do their own before & after runs on their in-house dynos, then the WOT 4th-gear runs should NOT engage the defeat device. Therefore, that reading would be an accurate portrayal of the car’s real power curve on the street.

I’m much more interested in exactly why types of dyno runs would enable the cheat, or if the cheat mode would ever get confused as to whether the car is being watched by the Feds or a tuner...

I always thought that if you just throw hardware at such an engine you might even get lower numbers. The full effect will only set in if you get a tune that matches your mods and will obviously override/delete any cheatcode. But that’s just my limited knowledge.

Omg! An intelligent, interesting question regarding dgate. Give the man a prize :)

I guess it all depends on what the conditions were for the baseline test.

I know there are ways to disable the adaptive strategy and other things in the engine ecm. I’m not sure where the defeat software is located but i’m sure these tuners have found a way around it, probably just on base line testing while monitoring things.

up to a certain point. On my e36 M3, I did a bigger MAF and an exhaust. I got good gains off the bat. Once i did headers, throttle spacer, cat delete, and such, I had to take it to a tune shop so they could get it all straightened out.

lets say the dude dyno’d it on a FWD “cheat activating” dyno and tuned on one as well. Would the tune be all messed up/not calibrated when the car goes on the road? Or, did the tuner dude remove the cheat somehow? OR!!!!!! did VW make a cheat for the cheap to go away if mods were done?

We do Revo software tunes here, and I’ve been getting quite a few calls about how this mess will affect tuned cars. As I understand it, the “cheat mode” won’t engage under normal dyno pulls, as the ECM has to see very specific parameters to select it, beyond simply recognizing the rear wheels are stationary. The EPA doesn’t test under full power, for example, and limits engine revs. Their test centers are also temperature controlled, if I’m not mistaken. So a power pull should reflect actual output.

We dyno -1996 cars for emissions here in my county and like you said, it’s like at 1500 then 2500. A WOT pull should delete the cheater tune then.

He’s only making power if there’s black smoke coming out the back. We all know that equals power. Therefore no smoke = no power.

My understanding is that the cheat is activated by putting the car in “dyno” mode. This can only be done using VW’s development tools. Tuners typically find other ways of disabling ABS and TCS for their dyno runs.

serious answer: I dont think so.

the software also took into account the speeds tht are used in the test. so any dyno numbers at WOT pulls would be an accurate representation.
