So yesterday I went on ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) about the Chevy SS. Then I started thinking about the current SHO. I had a ‘97 (V8, Yamaha heads) and really liked it. I still think I’d go SS to get the manual. But who knows?

Depends if you really want a manual. Have you also considered a Charger SRT 392 or Scat Pack, in order to round off the big three?

Test drive a Taurus - any Taurus - and you’ll find one reason why it doesn’t sell much outside of fleets: cramped interior. I’ve asked a couple of random cops how they feel about the Interceptor: they all agree its even more cramped, and long for their old Crown Vics.

I think I’ll research that next, but I’ll probably never buy another car. It’s too expensive to keep it in the city, and I only drive 3 or 4 times a year at this point. So I rent. For me it’s a thought exercise. It’s also why I come here - people writing about their cars and driving them. Vicarious, but it’s all I have.

Same here, bud. I’m a student in a major city, so I have no money or room for a car.

I’ve never even sat in a new one, so I can’t say. I both drove and rode in the back of my ‘97, and it had plenty of room (I’m 6 feet tall).

The sho has its advantages. Awd, turboed, moddable. But I don't think it'll be remembered, while the ss is going to hold its value, and it's available with a manual.

Yeah - that’s pretty much where I would come down were I in the market.

Manual, Yamaha V6, nice and simple.

The Taurus only sucks in interior space when you compare it to older full-sized cars. When you compare it to an old Taurus, it has grown (although that big center console doesn’t do it any favors).

The only American manufacturer of mainstream cars that still builds a proper full-size is Dodge/Chrysler, while everyone else has chased profit by moving people that would have bought full size cars into big wagons with truck styling (CUVs/SUVs). The closest equivalent to a Crown Vic in Ford’s line is the Explorer.

As a 6’1” owner of a ‘96 who also rented a 2013, I can attest that you wouldn’t be cramped in the current Taurus. Rear headroom in particular is the most noticeable improvement...

I would really like to try the new SHO. But I’m not willing to go to a dealer on false pretenses (which I did a long time ago). But a track day with the SS, SHO, and Charger similarly equipped would be my best birthday ever ... November 10, same as the Marine Corps, if anyone cares.

If you live in Michigan as I do, the AWD offered in the SHO is great. It is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever driven. Sure it isn’t as sporty as an SS or 392 Charger, BUT as a nice 4 door luxury DD, I think it’s the best out of the three.

Plus I was able to shock some people in Autox as to what a 4400lb Four door sedan can do.

My biggest gripe was the lack of available Performance Pack cars on the lot. You want the performance pack if for no other reason than it allows a full off mode for traction/stability control. Sure you’ll have to get winter tires but that’s the same with the SS or SRT.

Oh and I got 8 grand off the car with incentives.

I’m calling Bullshit. I’m 6ft 240lbs and i have plenty of room, my brother in law who is 6ft 5 in and 270 found the car to fit him perfectly. The reason cops find it cramped is because of their duty belts. ANY modern seat with any sort of bolstering and a center console will feel cramped.

I will say that the center console is designed poorly and there isn’t a lot of places to put things. But interior space is just fine for 4 American-sized adults.

The AWD is tempting, but of course I’m only spitballing here - I’ll never have to buy a car again. Once we find an apartment and buy it, we’re here for the duration.

I think you’d be happy if you test drove one. Suspension is pretty cushy for NYC streets

Yeah - but as I said, garage fees are high. We’re going to need the money to pay the maintenance fee on the apartment we’re shopping for.
