One is a light weight proper sports car. High revving N/A 4 cylinder engine. It has been called the 4 wheeled motorcycle because of how it handles.
The other is the same. Light weight, RWD. Smooth 6 cylinder engine from one of the best automotive brands on the planet. It even came in one of the best configurations: the 2 door shooting brake.
So why the hell does the S2000 and Z3 get more mention and love from Jalopnik? Both were far better than the Miata, yet the Miata gets set on a pedestal. In a match up both would out do the Miata on the track. So what is it? Is it because the Miata is so cheap or what? Why arent these two mentioned more?

That’s no Miata.... Scammer! Said ‘perfect roadster’ and it wasn’t a Miata! Kill the witch!

Probably.

S2000s aren’t cheap. And in my experience, their owners have been a bit, well, a bit like Mustang owners.
Z3, because we all adore what it became: Clownshoe.

Find me a Miata for 3 grand that isnt either fucked up, has no engine, or needs more than its worth in repairs just to get it down the street.

Find a S2K for cheap and thats unmolested

True, but many are 10 grand and you get Honda reliability from that era. Many that are 10k have over 120 thousand miles, that puts alot of people off though.
Most that mention the Z3 only mention the Clownshoe.

Both get plenty of love and respect here, but the Miata just has this lovable loser thing going for it that is attractive to many Opponauts. It’s like the skinny, weak, “sensitive” guy that gets picked on, but proves himself more capable than one would think when he gets in a fight...

Thats true. Whats cheap to you though? Because even with Miatas, 3 grand and under can get you shit.

How many S2000s remain that are unmolested?

Unless it’s for track use, I wouldn’t be interested in an S2000. 10.5 seconds 0-60 if you shift at 5,500 RPM, vs. 5.5 if you shift it at 8,500. I don’t want to rev the bejeezus out of a car in normal driving, no matter how good it sounds, just to accelerate faster than a Civic. You end up looking like an aggressive show-off when all you’re trying to do is keep up with the flow of traffic. No thanks.
The Z3 suffers from a relatively crude rear suspension, introduced by BMW in 1982. Although the models with the I6 are a blast to drive, especially the ///M versions (of course), most had the relatively gutless 1.9l I4, and way too many of those had automatics. This was the real hairdresser’s car, not the Miata. Finding a cheap I6 Z3 is a lot more difficult than finding a cheap Miata, and if you do, you still have to deal with BMW parts and labour costs. Having owned several BMWs over the years, I’ll stick with Miata costs.

Perfect answer. Didnt know that about the S2000 though. Most people just tout the high redline of the thing. And I totally forgot about the I4 in the Z3. I can just see some woman in a head scarf and sunglasses poking along in a red one.

The Kappa twins? They were OK for an American auto maker trying. They were more show than go though. To get anything out of them you have to find the Redline and GXP models, which are kind of becoming hard to find and are still pretty pricey in alot of areas.

They both suck.
The S2000’s super high revving engine is annoying and lacks low end torque, not to mention they still go for $15k+ at least
The Z3 is a BMW, so it’s not cheap to own, nor is it cheap to buy, and it costs more than a Miata while looking worse and driving worse.

The S2000 is a great car but they’re still pretty pricey. Also they’re thief magnets. My cousin had the seats stolen out of his.

I looked at both before I got my miata. I couldn’t find a low mile or good condition for them for a reasonable price.

Yea thats true. Thats pretty ghetto though. Stealing the seats out of someones car. Its not like they are Recaro’s or anything like that. Where does your cousin live, Long Beach?

Theres a few in my area for 9800. But at that price your getting an S2000 pushing 150k on the odo. At the same time though for those prices, you can get a few year old last gen Miata for that. So you do have a point.

for the record...I do absolutely love the S2k, I really wish I could find an untouched one with low(ish) miles for a good price. At the current market value though, it’s a total pipe dream for me

You also have to keep in mind the decreased fuel economy and emissions when running on the VTEC lobes. Since the revs never get high enough in government testing to invoke VTEC, Honda can design those lobes do whatever they want regardless of the laws.
A friend had a Prelude that he revved the hell out of on a regular basis, and the back of his car was covered in soot because of it, plus he was getting mileage in the low to mid teens. It was damn fun to get that engine singing like that, but it was hard on the wallet because of the consumption and bad for the environment, but perfectly legal.

Yea you arent going to find them for cheap with lower miles. If you do find low mile, newer ones (like 08-09 right before they went out of production) those still push 30k for some examples.

Availability is a big part, as well as parts availability, and after market support.
