Uber has been in court here defending itself against some rather desperate claims from the black cab cartel about how the Uber app is a ‘taximeter’ and therefore illegal. The judge explained in fairly clear, concise language why that’s not the case. And then:

These submissions are no more than an attempt, without clarity of wording or thinking, to devise something which will cause the Uber system to fall foul of s11

Woah! A sensible response to Uber? I’m shocked.

It’s been particularly fun watching the bitchfight over here, because all their drivers have to be (and are) licensed and insured like any other minicab driver. The anti-Uber mob really don’t have a leg to stand on.

The only arguments I’ve seen against Uber have been from people trying to prevent the market from deciding what it wants. The safety arguments are a joke. It’s actually surprising how few incidents there are considering how popular it is. If you look for regular cabbie assaults, they occur practically every day. They just don’t become front page news.

“have been from people trying to prevent the market from deciding what it wants.”

I’m less charitable than you there. I just call the cab-gangsters what they are.

“It’s actually surprising how few incidents there are”

I don’t find it surprising. A criminal would have to be a drooling idiot to attack someone when there’s an electronic trail of evidence like there is with Uber. It’s absolutely to be expected that the rate of attacks by Uber drivers is literally millions of times lower than that by regular cab drivers - which is the case, to be clear.

Millions of times safer. Millions.
