After over a year of a disassembled dashboard in the trusty Mazda5 I decided to put it back together. The last item I wanted to install, a simple but effective iPod/iPhone controller that uses a factory switch (a device I designed and built), is installed and working like a charm. The plastics for the center console are back in place but now I can’t find one item - the shift boot and the bezel around it. I’ve found every other part except this one and it’s driving me to distraction, to the point where I’m starting to ignore other tasks that need to get done.

I know in which room I left all of the trim pieces when I disassembled the dash, and I’ve torn that room (and several others) apart trying to find this piece. It’s not like I can run to the junkyard for one; less than 5% of Mazda5s were sold with the manual transmission, and I have yet to see a single current Mazda5 in any of the junkyards that I frequent. Buying the part again is just too much money - over $94, and that’s the discounted price.

I’ve wanted to start driving for Uber to get a little extra cash, but I don’t want to show up in a car with missing trim pieces. So I have to find this thing, wherever it may be. At this point I’m tempted to call a friend of mine to come over and act as a second set of eyes as well as being someone that can help me get that monster TV out of the living room.

Any suggestions on how to track down lost stuff? Tell me your tales...

I've seen wrecked GT models pretty cheap and I was thinking of buying one as a parts doner. However, in the U.S. all GTs have automatics so I would still be stuck in the same position as I am now.

Did you check in the car? Back seat or passenger footwell.

I know when I’m tearing apart my interior, that’s usually one of the first pieces that comes off... and I usually just sort of toss it in the backseat, or in the passenger footwell.

You could always go with the overplayed crown royal shifter boot...

good to hear. I’m planning on getting a manual 5 in a few months but would at least like heated seats.
