According to a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the 2018 Ram may have a tailgate design like the illustration below, which can open either horizontally or vertically. Looks pretty interesting.

Cool. I can’t quite figure out why this would be better, but its interesting if nothing else.

Having a horizontally folding tailgate means that a forklift can get closer the the actual bed of the truck. That’s why you’ll often see guys who have no bed or a mesh bed.

About time somebody did this!

So this:

...and it only took 49 years from when Ford introduced the Magic Door Gate and 23 years from when GMC introduced the Astro dutch doors.

Okay, that’s a good one. You will have to be careful not to hit the split gate doors but otherwise I could see that as being handy.

I can see some advantages, like carrying some long boards but you still want to contain the rest of the load that fits in the bed. But I can almost guarantee that this will be an option, not standard. So the question then is, how much with that option be. Probably way more than I will want to pay for a cool feature I use once every year or two.

this was there too.

These split gate systems have had a tough time catching on in the past, perhaps its just too niche of an offering

Most forklifts can push the fork forward enough to not have to worry about that no?

I can only see this being helpful for short beds (4 foot boxes). The door would be weaker which is a huge problem for anyone actually hauling.

If the skidsteer can even fit between the now 3’ long tailgate halves sticking off the back of the truck.

Good point, I suspect the door would be made strong, but you are basically adding a nice and neat little failure point in the middle.

Kinda neat, but I can’t say I’ve ever said to myself that I needed a split tailgate on a pickup truck.

They’re giving us something we didn’t ask for. What I’d like to see is the step-bumper that GM uses on all trucks. Unfortunately I think they have a patent on it.

I don’t like the headlights, but the rest of it looks good.

Olds Vista Cruiser did it first with their “Dual-action” tail gate

Looks like a great idea, makes you wonder why it hasn’t come yet

that’s cause the rest is the current truck.

Yes, but when you’re a contractor working with tons of different companies you can’t really expect that it will or won't.

It only takes 10 seconds to remove most rear doors and another 20 to put them back on, and you get to keep a stronger rear door.

I came here to post something similar. My parents used to have a 1980 LeSabre wagon. The tailgate could fold down, or swing to the side, and the window could roll down. Pretty amazing, but perhaps not quite up to truck duties:
(Not my parent’s wagon, but very similar looking)
