Hey Oppo,

I need to get a 39’ Plymouth pick up truck I inherited from Battle Creek Michigan to Columbus, Ohio.

From what I remember, last time we tried to transport it U-Haul trailers would not work, I think because they have rails and the truck tires weren’t spaced far enough apart. I can’t remember.

Any other suggestions as to where to rent a trailer? We have used a heavy equipment trailer before that we rented from a friend’s company but it had a pintle hitch which I am not a huge fan of (and they have since sold the business).

Thanks!

Rails/width trouble sounds likely. They’re too wide for a lot of classics. That’s a bit far for a dolly, too - even though a dolly would probably be wide enough, running uncertain tires, an uncertain diff, and uncertain bearings sounds like a risk.

My trailer is a big flatbed trailer, kind of like a landscapers trailer. The only issue I have is that it does have rails about 1 foot high, and sometimes you can’t open a door over them. Also, sometimes with bigger trucks the wheels don’t fit in between the rails. Your ‘39 might be like that... not that any of this info helps you directly.

I do know a guy who does car transport for a living now, if you wanted to give him a call for an estimate he runs all around the midwest and moves a lot of specialty cars.

Agreed - I wouldn’t run something like this on a dolly, who knows what could happen to a u-joint/driveshaft, rear axle, old tires etc...

We actually got it to Michigan on a dolly. Not doing that again though

Maybe contact a place that rents heavy equipment, and see if you can rent one of their trailers.

Otherwise, maybe put a “want to rent” ad in Craigslist, and see if somebody will rent you their personal trailer? It’s unlikely to work, but you never know unless you try.
