Well, sort of three things -

Kinja'd!!!

As of today I’m the proud owner of a g27 and Assetto Corsa (conveniently on sale on Steam until tomorrow, I think) with both DLC packs. Since my desk is an old-school rounded-front sort of writing deal (which is bad for computering) it’s impossible to clamp this on, so I’ve rigged it up on an old folding table which wobbles and is generally bad. I also pulled the shifter off the table and dropped it within 5 minutes of starting my first race, so Phase II - Build a Thing may have to come soon so I can use the actual shifter instead of the paddles.

First impressions are very good - took a while to get it to realize that the wheel could turn more than 200 degrees (which made it near impossible to drive - my 90 degrees was full lock in the car!) and of course I’m getting used to having actual controls - I’ve never played a sim with a wheel and pedals, just the real thing or Forza with a controller, so this is very cool.

Issues I’m having (now that I got the whole 90 degree = lock thing cleared up) - 1) I can’t mount the shifter well enough that 2nd and 4th don’t slowly work it off the table and onto the floor. 2) I can’t see, 15” laptop screen sitting behind the wheel is way to small for me to see turns coming up. 3) My desk chair slowly rolls away from the pedals. 4) Everything is so floppy on the table I can’t put the weight of my arms on the wheel or it tries to come off the table, and it all sort of shakes around when there’s a lot of force feedback.

That said, I’m enjoying it - I think there’s a lot of tuning of the wheel settings in my future (the feedback seems way to strong at times), as well as getting a monitor so I can actually see (any suggestions on this?). I also do intend to Build a Thing which involves an actual car seat and a somewhat realistic seating position which will hold the wheel/shifter/pedals steady. This should take care of the problems, other than the fact that I’m not very good at this yet. Hopefully that will get sorted out along the way.

Oh and the terminal-understeer feel in the wheel is very realistic, first time I actually cringed a little.

Nice! Take care of it and it will last a loooooooong time. I still have a G25 that I bought in 2004, and it still works just as well as the day I got it.

Didn’t they come out with a new one recently?

Anyways, nice purchase. Enjoy it!

Yeah, there’s the G29 which costs almost twice as much and doesn’t come with a shifter :/

And thanks! I plan to enjoy it quite a bit, especially while stuck inside this winter.

Whenever I have a pick-up race with my G27 and I’m too lazy to set up a full rig, I just hold my office chair in place with two 20lb weights (around the base) which is more than enough to lock in an ergonomic driving position. Minor adjustments every 2-3 races to combat left-foot braking, but no issues with the setup thus far.

Mind you, I also have a wheelstand pro for my G27 so I don’t have to deal with table-clamps (though the shifter does still move around).
