In the good old days, American youths would cobble together their tepid rods, and hit the local main ST to cruise and to show off.
Nowadays, many of these old-school cruisers are locked up in garages, only to be taken out on occasions like the Dream cruise. So, what’s the best modern strip cruiser you can go buy today?
My vote goes to the Challenger R/T, specifically with an 8-speed Torqueflite, and the best sound system available, in a bright color. It’s loud, big, comfy, lazy. everything you want when you roll down main, and hang a right in to the local Burger Drive-in.
just
look
at it! It’s so AMERICUHN!

The challenger is the only real ‘old school’ muscle there is

Challenger R/T Scat Pack, 6 speed. For cruising, and also burnouts.

I need to test drive a scat pack... I adore the looks, and I am seriously considering buying one next year

The new Impala.
Its comfortable, has an available v6, pretty good sound system too. Seems like a good cruiser to me.

Ironic that when the headlights are on it looks decidedly German:

Wouldn’t this be the best modern Cruzer?

Not to mention that it’s probably the best-looking Chevy in recent memory. Besides the newest Corvette.

I think there are lots of good choices. But for old school strip cruising, you chose the best one.

heh, a bit.... although those rigs are nice, I’d rather have a Benz AMG

The S65 coupe. Obviously

I wouldn’t be complaining with either. ;D

Disqualified because not convertible.
Phantom Drophead is the answer.
Honorable mention to the M6.

It’s possibly the best bargain you can get, and a great car. But every time you get on it you’ll think about the Hellcat and what could have been.

If only Cadillac would produce the damn thing. I mean, holy shit is that one gorgeous car.

From everything I’ve read about the Hellcat and the Scat Pack, it’s actually the opposite. People actually seem to admit that the Hellcat has too much usable power, while the Scat Pack has enough.

What about the Chevy SS with Magride?

I think if we are going modern then we can’t discount an SUV. Escalade, Yukon Denali, Jeep GC SRT8. I think you’d be surprised the amount of vehicles that could qualify. In fact aren’t the new Crossover Coupes sort of this? X6 M and M-AMG GLE63. Just another perceptive.

If you’d seen the one I saw with the custom blue piping and leather interior with matching blue panels and stitching, you’d go nuts. Although I quite like that neon green.

Maybe for pedal mashing auto journos. The Hellcat will be better on the highway, but you can’t just floor it straight from go.

So in the good ole days, kids would cobble together a rod on an after school job budget from junkyard parts. And today, kids purchase a $40k hot rod?

The Challenger is definitely the modern American cruiser. Maybe some European rides such as the Jaguar XK and BMW 6-series could count too.

see, I didn’t even remember it...
That’s a very good choice too! :D
They should offer it with the Camaro’s 4-pot and V6 though. call it the caprice, and watch it sell
![]() 10/14/2015 at 23:29 |

that is true, an escalade would be amazing! so would an SRT jeep!

yaaaasssss.....
I’m thinking...
if all goes well, I will be able to order a Scat Pack next July.
My current idea is Jazz Blue, with Red Interior. I think that’d be a unique one!
although, I would love a used E63 AMG as well

agreed.

EcoBoost Flex.
Alternately, a comfortable convertible, like the 2002+ Thunderbird (which I was reminded of thanks to RCR) or Volvo C70. Cruising doesn’t have to mean showing off; it's about enjoying the ride and universal affection for our mobile metal.
