You live in Albany NY. You are going to wake up tomorrow and find that the following things have happened;
99.9% of Earth’s population is either dead or dying. You haven’t been touched by the disaster, but most of everyone you know is dead.
Most of our technology is now broken. Cellphones, guns, internal combustion engines - almost everything we depend upon has been destroyed or rendered inoperable. Even really simple things like a piece a flintrock and wood to burn will not work at all. Liquid and gaseous sources of fuel have also been ruined globally by the disaster.
You can’t see anything in the distance and the sky is blackened over, but you can hear something very large stomping around downtown Albany. You have reason to believe it has been destroyed. Every single major metro area in the US has befallen a similar fate.
Every source of fresh water is now dangerous to drink from and cannot be safely filtered. All of the food and possible food sources like animals have been ruined or destroyed. Only sealed ration packets are still good to eat...if you can find them somewhere.
You have reason to believe that escape from the disaster is waiting for you in Seattle. You are allowed ONE piece of functioning technology to assist you on the trip. You are also allowed a garage filled with the things you think you might need to help you survive the journey.
You have one week to get to Seattle. After that, the window of opportunity for you will close and the Earth will not be habitable by human beings anymore. What did you bring with you? Did you make it there in time?

No one would make it, it would take 36 days to walk there and every mode of transportation would require more than one piece of technology or infrastructure. Plus without water you would die in about 3 days.

1) Okay, so one ‘device’ then.
2) “You are also allowed a garage filled with the things you think you might need to help you survive the journey.”

So does that mean fuel in the garage is okay?

So ... does this Garage of Holding magically appear when we need something out of it or do we have to transport it along with us somehow?

Working tech: Electric ultra-light plane.
Garage filled with: Borked, but repairable batteries.
Miss Tesla and I make it with time to spare.

Think of it like the room of requirement from HP; anything you think will help will be there, but you have to leave behind anything you can’t take with you when you go.

Moved to be with the girlfriend. But that blew up, and now you live up there as a single when all this shit happens.

Ok, got it.
So my one “device” will be a Dual Sport:
My magic garage will contain fuel, food, water & first aid things and basic medicines (pain relievers, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.
Hell, it’s a whole freaking garage to myself, so it also has a well-stocked bar and some herb.

one piece of technology that works? I’ll take a CD player with Rick Astley’s “Never gonna give you up” stuck on repeat, and a supply of batteries.
That way, the .1% of people will hear me coming, come to my aid, and help me go XC in a week

Well technically I'm just in the Capital district... I don't actually live in Albany. But, who told you?
