The clear coat is starting to come off my driver’s fender at the wheel arch. Not cool. It’s already happened to the plastic rain gutter covers and the top of the rear bumper, so now it’s only a matter of time before my car looks like a beater.

I’m curious whether anyone knows if there is a remedy to this that doesn’t involve a shit ton of money? The last car this happened to me on was my ‘94 T-bird when it got to be about 8 years old. It hasn’t happened to my (almost) 6 year-old Fusion yet but I’m getting nervous.

I would guess a temporary solution would be to get some clear nail polish and “seal” the edges of where the clear coat is peeling. Or I can just weep quietly every time I look at it.

Original paint? The plastic parts I see peeling all the time, but the clear peeling from the factory paint on metal surfaces doesn’t seem as common.

Sounds like it's time for an upgrade! Yay, new car!

I am not sure. Carfax doesn’t show any accidents, but I am under the impression it could have been in an accident. The paint looks original, and still carries the paint code stamping and plastic cover. It is 13 years old...

I’ve got to hold out until the wife’s Insight is paid off (2 years). By then my car should have over 200,000 miles on it. Doesn’t make sense for us to have two car payments at the moment. Knowing me I’ll do something stupid and get another used luxury car again.

Hmm, weird. I mean, I’ve seen them peel, but it’s usually on hammered cars that haven’t seen wax in years, and I doubt yours fits that description.

Wait, wait.... Wife? Wasn’t she your fiancée just a couple of weeks ago? Did you two get hitched already?!?! Congratu-fucking-lations!!!!

Insert all the celebration gifs here (I would if I weren’t on my phone, heh).

But seriously... Yay!

Also, yeah... Not having two car payments sounds sensible. I usually drive my cars until they’re nothin more than rolling piles of brake dust held together with chewing gum. Ok, maybe not *that* bad, lol.

Anyway, good luck when you guys do decide to go car shopping again. :)

Thank you! Married last Saturday.

I like to hold on to my cars as long as I can as well, but the E46 just doesn’t sit right for some reason. The Cherokee was great because it was a do-anything go-anywhere car, whereas the E46 is just a coupe that’s fun to drive. We don’t usually take it on road trips because it’s got a harsher ride and lacks space for more than two people (I mean, it has back seats but not really). It’s paid off, so now I just need to keep it looking relatively good (new light covers and taillights, B-pillar trim, etc.) and running right for a while.
