"Osiris - I can haz Euro spec?" (o51r15)

So, being in Spain, I want to buy a car. That’s what you do right?
Now this is where you, the opponaut, come in. I need to find a car, but I don’t really know what I want. I know that it has to be older than '91. Preferably not older than '80 and definitely a Euro only model. I have a few idea's but I don't know really anything about the Euro market so, please, point me in some right (or wrong) directions!

How much do you want to spend?
I have been dreaming this dream since arriving in Belgium last year.
Search on “theparking.eu” or autoscout.
Ford Sierra, Opel Manta, Ford Escort and Ford Capri all come to mind.

You’re in Spain so an old Seat, an original Ibiza maybe or a Marbella (Mk 1 Fiat Panda).

True. They are everywhere. Parts would be plentiful. But would it be fun? I'm looking for something that I could both DD and take to Catalunya for a track day.

I thought about an older Seat, but I just can't pull the trigger on them. I love the new Leon, but the older stuff just looks bland to me.

It's funny you should mention the Ford's because I, for some reason or another, absolutely love the Escort RS Turbo. And I've found a handful of them out here. Also, I saw a Sierra Cosworth for something like 2,500 euro. I almost emailed the dude right then and there.

Well, there were few sport trims available.
Plus, possibility for 80’stastic electronic dash.

The 80s in Europe was the golden age of the hot hatch. That’d be where I’d go if you want something fun and location-appropriate.
In roughly diminishing order of driving fun: 205GTi, Renault 5 GT Turbo, Golf GTI, Fiat Ritmo Abarth, Fiat Uno Turbo, Opel Kadett GTE. Even - if you must - an Escort XR3.
Any of them will give you winding road fun you won’t get anywhere else, at vaguely legal speeds and without breaking the bank.
Just get used to lift-off oversteer, rust, and disappearing trim, and don’t crash if you want to live.

Now this is what I was looking for. I'll definitely look into these, see how much they're going for, and how much work I'd have to put into one. Awesome! Thanks!

Well, the sedan doesn't look bad but I'd prefer a hatch. And that dash is awesome! I had an '84 Camaro Berlinetta with an all digital dash that just made me laugh every time I looked at it.

But, but “System Porsche” on the orig Ibiza!!! lol
And anyway, in SXi trim it looks kind of cool (compared to most late 80’s\early 90’s cars), if you can find one -

I also really like the current Leon, the Cupra 280 version (with DSG, I don’t care I want an auto!) is on the shortlist for the Abarth 500 replacement.

VW Corrado - Production started in 1988. Not sure if the VR6 versions were available pre-’91 but the supercharged G60 was. Get that.

I have actually seriously considered the Corrado. And I can go as high as '92 but that's the 25 year mark for when I go back to the states. So it would come down to what month in '92 it was made. Stupid NHTSA.

I did a little digging after posting this, looks like the VR6 was introduced in 1991 so you should be able to find one. It was quicker but apparently the engine had more issues than the G60 so worth doing some research. I’ve driven one that belonged to a friend and it was a great handling car. I don’t think it’d be a bad choice at all.
