First my cousin’s accident, and now today I’m pretty damn sure I failed my midterm paper for my world masterpieces class. (;_;)
My midterm was basically writing three 1 1/2-2 page papers for three different prompts in regards to the Iliad in 75 minutes. So that’s 25 minutes per paper if one can manage that on the dot, and I couldn’t. I finished two of the three papers in the time allowed and only got my introductory sentence on the third paper before time was up. I wouldn’t feel so bad about this except for the fact that I’m already retaking this for the second time, and since I failed the first major paper assignment because of bullshit from my professor on why I did so poorly, I’ll most likely have to retake this shit a third time. I fucking hate how for some reason, I have to be “well-rounded” in the school’s eyes to be an engineer. I just wanna learn engineer shit to get my degree and leave, I have no interest in reading these damn books again, and I’m pretty sure this prof just wants me to fail at this point because there’s no way I can raise my grade up to an acceptable grade to pass that I’d like; especially since I changed my major this semester and wanted to start fresh with a new GPA, but since I’m probably not gonna pass this, fuck that now!
But it also didn’t help that I saw this on the 944 in our driveway before class:
A foot long series of scratches and another 3 inch set on the passenger rear wing and door respectively on my car just before I left for class that wasn’t there this weekend, and the car hasn’t left the driveway since Saturday. I’m grateful to my parents for giving me a home with all the amenities and such, but why the hell would you think you could do this after I just washed and waxed the car the day before and even if it was an accident not tell me?? And no, they did not buff out with a hand polish, the marks are still quite visible and I doubt either of the two will fess up to who did it. (-_-)
When exactly does shit get better? If there’s any good news, my cousin didn’t receive any brain damage.

Are you possibly overthinking on the essays? I’ve had that problem before, especially on timed ones. If so, try to just answer what the prompt is asking, it doesn’t need to be as neat or organized as a normal essay. I find that if I answer the question with as much detail as I can the format and length matters less to professors. Most professors/TAs when grading are looking for the main points in the essays, not on the structure or length.
As for the scratches they look like they’ll buff out with an orbital polisher, someone dinged my door the other day in a parking lot and I don’t even have 2k on it yet.

I found that somewhere late in my sophior year (3rd year, still behind on some year 2 things) that I was able to care a little less about Things That Are Stupid, and consequently did much better. It’s a paradox - there’s a magic level of not caring required to be able to plod through which still is *sort of* like caring, except not.
Anyway, that was the humanities breakthrough, the core topics take longer to get to that zen state. Ask me about Statics some time - urgh.

In all honesty the entire point of a bachelor’s degree is two fold. A. To show to a corporation that you can shovel shit for four years. B. Not make a fool of yourself at dinner parties.
A long long time ago, at a state college far far away, I too was going to be an engineer until they killed my desire and my gpa. Ended up graduating win business just to escape.

She specifically told us a good paper for the prompts would be a page 1/2 which I did for both with as much detail as I could muster. I’ve never had this problem before, which makes it more frustrating.

What class was this? As an engineer most of my papers were research based or project reports. Never had to do that kind of stuff for any of my general courses. The only one that was like that was an introductory architecture course that I really wasn’t interested in and fell asleep in often since it was 2 hours long and started at like 7:30. Normally when faced with having to write a lot in a short time I go into autopilot mode and am able to basically spew back what I learned in the previous weeks with some sort of cover of personal insight or expansion.

That’s what my dad did. I’m supposed to be the person that doesn’t fail out of an engineering degree and scamper on to a business degree because I “couldn’t handle it” or it was “too much for me to handle”...I don’t know what I’ll do if I can’t do engineering.

Just trying to provide encouragement on the World Masterpieces crap. Not that you care what you’re doing in that class too much, but I was kind of trying to make a general point that the tendency to stress out, which causes a lot of trouble, tends to die off after a while in school, but it can be a long time, years even. There’s nothing quite like plugging away until you get through by hook or by crook, even when professors can’t teach, advisers can’t advise, and TAs can’t TA. In the mean time, try to only worry just enough, and no more. Fewer panic attacks that way.

Dig in, if you want it bad enough the only way they can take it from you is from your dead mangled hands. There will always be a place where someone gets stuck and it usually isn’t where they think it will be. I failed my calc II course... twice, shrugged it off took it over the summer at a different place and transfered the credits. Calc III and Linear Methods which came after happened to be one of the easiest courses for me. Not to try and be a downer but theres a reason why there’s a talk of the look to your left and now your right, chances are those 1 or 2 people might not be there in the end. In the end everything works out, it might not go how you expected but if you take advantage and explore while you can during these years you will find your niche.

World masterpieces. Consider it a look into historical literature and understanding what it is and it’s culture and in this case, how it relates to the human condition; because that’s clearly what engineering is about!! Classic literature!!!

But seeing as I’m pretty sure I’m gonna damn near fail the class at this point, can’t drop the class for refund anymore, and don’t wanna retake it for a third time, and the professor was and is very unhelpful to me.....I’m shit outa luck and options...

They’ll take it from me if I have no money left to give...
They never said the look to your left or right anything when I came here. I don’t see things working out without that degree, I don’t have the money to explore or adventure or anything of the sorts.
It’d be nice if whatever the hell that thing that makes things work out would just pop up now instead of having to torture myself in waiting for something that seems more and more distant every day.

Yes, been there, done that, too late for not worrying about how you’re *going to* do, out of options... I nearly screwed up graduating that way. One option remains: letting it ride and not continuing to worry. Fuming, though, do that. Like I had to the second time I took Calc 3... and Calc 2, for that matter. One worked out, the other didn’t. Yeah, I’ve had to take a class three times. Passing by the skin of your teeth and dumping are almost equally suck, but they both happen. Big picture: it’s all survival, this class and others. Take it from me, for I am He Who Should Not Be An Engineer, Because His Abstract Math Sucks On Toast. Take two fuckitol and call me in the morning.

I was in mechanical, then dropped to mechanical technology and would rather die than do what my dad did in business. I’m not going to sit at a desk hours on end and do absolutely nothing. If I wanted to do that, I’d work retail for the rest of my life like I do now. There’s simply no fun for me to be had and I’ll be reminded of my dad’s failure to get an engineering degree for the rest of my life.

At least the engineering would’ve involved things I like: cars
Not doing financial stuff all the damn time or something with numbers and money every single minute.

I graduated in business, I work in IT. My wife graduated in psychology, and she works in finance. Your degree isn’t a prison sentence. Not saying that business is what I would recommend but just because you graduate in something doesn’t mean it’s your life path.

I kinda agree with you on the enigeering stuff. I had to take english twice. (granted, it was technical writing, not shakespeare or some bull like tht)
I’m wondering how bad stats and chemistry are going to be...not looking forward to either of those.

Technical writing makes sense for the major. It will actually and hopefully contribute to my future. Never am I gonna use any Homer epics or any of that nonsense in my life.
I’ve taken chem, I hate chem, physics is soo much better. Hell, I just tested out of my physics class with an A- this week. Still have to do the lab though next semester(if I make it that far). If you have to do a lab for chem......That won’t be fun.

you see, i thought that too...then i realized it was TOTALLY basic shit like: how to lay out a report and how to submit a formal request and (no joke) how to adress your superiors....really?!
yea,. at one point, they wanted us to take an aboriginal studies class...THAT would have been total and utter BS. its got literally NOTHING to do with engineering.

That’s my class right now!! Proposals, resumes and cover letters and all this basic stuff. I mean, it’s nice and helpful, but we’re paying for this??
The hell would you need aboriginal studies for at any point?? I just wanna take engineering classes, not classes I would’ve taken in high school. That sounds like a freaking elective class. More ways for them to make money I guess?

wouldnt have been any extra.
some bullshit because our school is way up north and that we are closer to most aboriginal groups then others. point being? you dont see toronto making the students take oriental studies courses, even though like 1/2 the city is either from china or from india.

That is definitely some bullshit. That’s like I should learn about Native Americans in Canada because I’m just north of Windsor. You’re so on point with Toronto. Even though I’ve only been once, I saw more Asians than any other race in the week I spent there. Hell, we don’t even have a Detroit study or history class, and that would actually be relevant.

And you probably have no idea how many fucks I give if that’s all you bothered to say on the internet. At least I tried buffing it out to no avail instead of sitting around crying like a bitch. For what it’s worth, both my mom and I realized my dad did it, and also hit her car as well with whatever it was that it set off her alarm, and the scratches on my car actually go from the taillight to the rear of the door. I’m not demanding one of them pay to have it fixed properly or suing them, I’ll fix it myself as best as I can when I have the time. All I asked was why one of them didn’t tell me it happened instead of my finding out days later.
But you know what, that’s perfectly fine, all you older people jump to entitlement as your scapegoat for everything that happens to younger people, nothing new here.
And I’m not the entitled one, you’re looking at the wrong oppo for that, he’s got a red 4-door VW and more parental money than I’d ever want.

SERIOUSLY?!?! You need a reality check man. And yeah, entitlement comes up a lot, especially when people are acting entitled as fuck. My parents never bought me ANY car. I was lucky to get use of my mom’s 3 series or my dad’s ‘94 Volvo wagon, and when I fucked their cars up I paid for it, out of my own pocket. Sure, I had my shitty moments of not being appreciative of all they’ve done for me, but for fucks sake man, think about all the sacrifices they’ve made for you, just for a minute.
