Well I got my bike back.
I talked him down from 4700 to 4200, still 1200 over budget. I also talked with Steve Lehto, who was very helpful with my situation. He informed me that what the guy did is illegal, did additional work without discussing the cost or the fact that he was way over budget before hand. Steve suggested I get the bike back then take him to small claims court to get my money back, this way the bike is in my possession and he can’t do anything to it (take parts off, mess with the engine, etc).
It is definitely fun to ride, bike has a lot of power for being 38 years old. Only plans I have for the future are to take the tank, fender, cowl, side panels to a buddy and have them painted in the new Honda red.

I had a shop do this to me on a car. I brought it in because i thought the ball joints were worn based on the feeling I had driving it. He did bearings, a transmission service (it was never 100% right afterward) and some other things without even talking to me. My wife got the car (it was pouring rain, she had bee dropped off with our toddler so she asked to take my car to go get cash, he would discount if we paid cash) and we put it in the driveway and notified the local police and a lawyer.
He and I had a few spirited discussions on the phone and he threatened to come take my car as I “stole his parts.”
I’m an honest guy at the end of the day. I said he was defending a losing proposition, that small claims courts don’t tend to side with grease monkeys who hoodwink customers, etc.
We resolved it in the end that I would cover his cost on the parts and that was all. I paid no labor because I never authorized it.
His shop was closed within 10 months with a sign on the door saying they had moved to a town 15 miles away.

This guy just went way over budget. Told him from day 1, as long as it’s under $3,000 I’ll be happy. So when we talked about some other things that needed to happen, he never mentioned additional money, so it was always played out as though he was staying within the budget

That sucks titties, but the big question is whether the guy was deliberately trying to screw you over, or if it was an honest mistake where he thought you’d understood it was going to cost extra. If it’s the former, go all Lehto on his ass, but if it’s the latter, and there’s a will to work something out, you ought to be able to negotiate something reasonably satisfactory to both of you.

If he would have told me he was going over budget, it would be a different story. I’ve worked with him a bunch in the past, and whenver he’s hit a snag, he’s alwas called me and told me it’s going to be X more dollars. He said that I needed a new rear master cylinder as the old one was seized and I was fine with that. He ended up rebuilding/replacing almost the entire brake system. New calipers, pads. That alone was $800.

Sounds like a plan. I stopped going to a local shop (except for inspections, because they’re fairly “accomodating”) for the same reason. I knew they needed to rebuild my clutch master cylinder, which is why I brought it to them. They did the slave cylinder while they were at it, which I only found out about when I picked up the bike and got the bill. My clutch had been slipping anyway, so I let this slip as well. The next time, they’d replaced the front brake pads when we never even discussed brakes, nor was I convinced it actually needed them, and I can swap disc brake pads myself in my sleep.
They also installed a new tire with a leaky valve. They replaced the valve and tried to charge me for the job. I discovered the second valve leaked badly when it let go and I got into a tankslapper on the interstate with my lady on the back. Quick reflexes and not panicking were all that saved us from a BIG spill. (Don’t worry, I did a LOT of adrenaline fueled panicking after we were safely stopped on the shoulder.) I had it towed to a different shop to do the job right, and replace the now unusable new back tire.

Yeah, that sounds a bit sketchy.

To be fair, I’ve always saw inline 4 bikes having such smooth power delivery, a parallel-twin wouldn’t keep up with it.

Only other bikes I’ve owned are dirt bikes, so all single cylinder. My CRF450X rips because of how light it is and is just instant power. But the inline 4, is just so damn smooth.

Your new post disappeared, but I wanted to wish you luck. I don’t understand why the other guy thinks he can get away with something like this. I hope he’s willing to settle. It’s in everyone’s best interest.

Thanks, yeah I deleted it on advice from a few others. I have not mentioned the shops name so I figured no big deal, but I don’t want to be one of those that screw themselves by posting something online they shouldnt before the hearing (tomm is mediation, required to try and avoid going in front of a judge)
