The Nexcel from Castrol has blown my mind. I need it in my life.

I like that this will possibly increase oil changes, as it would be much easier for a consumer to change their own oil. However, i am worried that the cost increase will be large. I’ve never had a problem changing my own oil, which has always been much cheaper than paying a shop to do it. This might shift that in the other direction.

Reminds me of a printer cartridge. Probably will cost a million bucks apiece.

untill they can hold 15 quarts im good

I am entirely unconvinced of the benefits to the end user. It takes me less than 15 minutes to change the oil in my car, which I only have to do every few months. It’s not like I’m going to suddenly have a ton of free time thanks to this. And what happens to the oil left in the engine when you change out the cell? Conventional lubrication systems allow for most of the oil to drain down into the pan below the engine. Surely this will leave a greater amount of used oil behind than conventional systems do. And there’s no way this is going to be cost effective when compared with the $20-$25 I spend now to change my oil.

Well I think that’s really fucking cool!

My mom has never and will never change her own oil. But she could do this in 30 seconds. From the start it’s a proprietary system so it goes in Aston Martins and has a premium price, which is what gave Castrol the incentive to do this, but for more widespread adoption it’ll have to come down in price. By the time it hits mom’s Camry, it’ll be a cheap commodity, hopefully with standardized sizes across makes.

In the Aston, yes. But when they want to go after the volume market of non-rich, non-enthusiasts, they’ll have to standardize and drop the price.

We’ll all be driving EVs long before this catches on. I mean, how cheap and easy is it for your mom to pull into any jiffy lube/sears/tire kingdom and pay $25 and get an oil change in 20 minutes. Sure, this is faster, but your mom is probably driving something that only needs an oil change once or twice a year. You know at best she’d buy this and bring it home for someone else to install for her. My mom doesn’t even like to pump her own gas.

It’ll still probably be pretty expensive, like in the hundreds of dollars range...also, I was remarking on the fact that printer cartridges nowadays can quickly exceed the cost of the printer in two or three replacements...

This is really cool.
No more, “Gee, I hope the grease monkey at the local budget-lube remembered to tighten down my oil filter.”

Right, the razor and blade model, I just don’t see that transferring to cars, especially since automakers won’t benefit from expensive “accessories” but will be hurt by higher costs of ownership.

Great idea (unless you own a german car that eats a quart every 1000 miles).

Preach!
![]() 10/12/2015 at 07:28 |

And then, there will be people still doing oil change at the service. Or dealers, obligating changes at the service

Funny story I made that mistake on my cobalt... Never again though

Being a BP product I’m certain that there will be no chance of leaking.

So many questions left unanswered! Does this box take the place of the oil pan or is the oil pan reduced in size? If it doesn’t, then how many quarts of oil will you car be carrying around between what is normally in the pan/engine and what is in the box? Will the replacement interval be the same? How much of that box is filter? It looked like the box comes in a few sizes. How many and what are their capacities? It seems this solution will create additional weight carried higher in the frame. If so, how much? There isn’t much room under the hood in many cars. Can this be remotely mounted in the trunk?
Until they release some technical details, I’ll stay skeptical.

Still have to get under there to grease the chassis...

I’ve read an article stating that they somehow want to recycle the oil, therefore greatly reducing the amount of oil needed for cars. Still not sold on it though.

F350? I don’t feel your pain (anymore)

You make it 1000 miles before a quart dissapears!? Ha! Mine doesn’t even get oil changes anymore, I add oil so often it isn’t necessary.

yup good ole 7.3 powerstroke
![]() 10/12/2015 at 13:18 |

Actually mine doesn’t burn enough to need oil between changes. YET!
I know it’s fairly common though. They need to have someway of topping off.

My German car is 45 years old so that’s my excuse. I’m pretty sure I burned nearly a quart just taking off Saturday morning. Poor guy behind me probably thought it was on fire from the smoke.
Oh well, it’s still a lot of fun to drive!

Knew it had to be a ford :). The Chevy’s never took as much. But my 6.0 was 13 and my 6.7 was 14 or 15. Used to just drain it straight into a 5 gallon bucket. On my Cooper S not so much...
![]() 10/12/2015 at 15:56 |

No, probably a combination of the fact that it requires tools, and gets done with the oil service. I bet as a drop-in, standardized cartridge it would also draw a lot more marginal customers...
![]() 10/12/2015 at 23:20 |

Haha, true. I always say “Well, I might as well just buy a whole new printer.”

My goodness. You’d better stick to the old-fashioned way.

That’s a good point. I never thought of what might happen to the oil that’s in the engine. Hmm.

Heh.
![]() 10/12/2015 at 23:26 |

My dad actually does that...since printer technology keeps improving he goes and buys a better printer after maybe a few months (that invariably has cheaper cartridges) and the old one gets retired to upstairs duty or donated to the school...we’ve gone through at least 5 printers this way so far up to our current HP Officejet Pro 8610...
![]() 10/12/2015 at 23:27 |

Good point. Plus oil changes are kinda fun anyway.
![]() 10/12/2015 at 23:29 |

I typically buy refurbished cartridges, which are much cheaper. I don’t do that much printing anyway.
![]() 10/12/2015 at 23:32 |

Ah, in our household we commonly print 15-20 sheets at a time of sheet music (both my parents are music teachers and I play violin) as well as school assignments, so it’s nice that the 8610 seems to have some of the biggest cartridges around!

yea I have a cut 5 gal bucket. it sits high enough I don’t even need anything to jack it up to change the oil

I agree - creative marketing - but I foresee issues.... I understand folks not wanting to do it, but with few exceptions changing your oil and oil filter really is a piece of cake already.
