Inagine what that pile would be worth now. Back then, it was just so much scrap.

$10-$15 million would be my guess. It was easier than shipping them home.

I wonder if my Dad's business partner flew any of those planes. During WWII he ferried new planes to Europe and Asia, and was one of the first to fly the P-38's.

There’s a dive site in Vanuatu called “Million Dollar Point”. It’s where the US military just shoved everything into the water at the end of WWII. Vanuatu (aka the New Hebrides) was the main US base for the Western Pacific, so there was a shitload of stuff dumped.

Amazing, if depressing, dive...

obligatory

A lot of these aircraft were scrapped/destroyed as factories were still producing new aircraft. also these were beginning to be outdated. Afterwards any aircraft with damage, older models or high flight hours were just chucked and prime examples shipped back.

What is crazy is the amount of shells and ammo that were dumped in the pacific as they are heavy (costly to ship), dangerous cargo and didn’t know how/where to safegaurd them.

Still I wish someone went
