It’s a 1979 Yamaha XS400. It has a bunch of new parts and the carbs were rebuilt ~800 miles ago. It belongs to my brother’s roommate. He’s asking $1,500 so he can upgrade to a bigger bike. Opinions, please?

Interesting. My first bike was an XS400 that a friend gave me for co-signing on a loan for an Intruder 700. I brought it up to school in Los Angeles, but a broken float mount in one of the carbs sidelined it and it ended up in a collection of abandoned bikes at the dorms. I always wondered what happened to it, especially after finding the title or registration the other day when cleaning house.
$1,500? Yikes! Had I known that turd was going to appreciate in value so much I might have found replacements or repaired the carbs and continued to ride it. I dunno - the price seems a little steep, but I’m basing my opinion on my experiences back in ‘92/’93.

1000 would be my offer. 1200 tops if you ride it and enjoy it. THe XS yamahas arent that rare and it looks a bit chopped up. You can buy any number of UJMs in great shape for 1500-2000. I paid 700$ for my 1985 nighthawk 650. It ran but needed a battery. It had new tires and everything. 1000$ gets you “turn the key and go” 400-650cc 80s bikes all day, every day.

Can you do it for $800-$900?
$1500 is a bit high.

1500 is kinda steep but he’s done/had a lot of work done to it to make it rideable. New brakes, chain, rear sproket, working, carbs, etc. I may be able to talk him down a but though.

Yeah, it does appear that a great deal of work has been done to this bike, and it’s just a fairing and paintjob away from being a pretty sweet budget cafe racer.
Whenever we’re discussing a modified car on Jalopnik it is universally agreed that modifications and maintenance don’t necessarily increase the value of the vehicle in question, and I wonder if the same thing should apply here as well. Is not like an XS400 is something special - as a former owner I can honestly say that it’s a slow and buzzy UJM and not much more. It all depends on whether it is worth it to you and nobody else.

Would it be your first bike? Stuff from that era is famously under-braked...I had a CB750 that I reeeealy had to plan my stops with.
That's a super cool bike, just make sure the brakes are up to snuff. Looks solid for the money to me.
