We went and saw The Martian the Friday it opened at Atlantic Station here in Atlanta. The Goergia Southern University football team came in noisily a few minutes before the lights came downwind sat in a large group. This was one of the trailers that played. It got really quiet on their side of the theater for a bit.

If I had the ability and the desire to play football, I honestly don’t think that knowing the risks would keep me from playing. Even if I played a high-risk position like linebacker, it probably wouldn’t stop me.

True, there are a lot of risks in rewarding things. The thing that is important is understanding those risks and being honest with yourself when evaluating them.

Sounds good. And interesting. But I hate the possibility of it taking a movie to get the general public to understand the realities of concussions and how important it is for athletes, soldiers, and anyone who’s suffered one, really, to take care of it.

As someone who has suffered a few concussions from hockey and general recklessness I’m very interested in this movie. Plus there havnt been too many will Smith movies I havnt liked.

I’d rather people be aware and willing to deal with the problem after seeing the movie than have them continue to be unaware of it at all.

I understand that, I just we should already be at a point where a majority of people are aware of concussions.

Knowledge isn’t something we automagically get for being human beings. You have to either have it passed down to you from somewhere, or you have to seek it out yourself. Absent those two factors or something else like them, the amount of time that should pass before ‘everybody knows’ a given thing will be infinite, because no one will.

It would be totally awesome if people took it upon themselves to research concussions, but people who are unlikely to get one aren’t gonna do that. It’s unreasonable to expect people to just go and get information they don’t believe will be relevant in their daily lives, even if some of them will be wrong about that and won’t know until it’s too late. At least with the movie, some people will be willing to seek out and absorb the information in the form of entertainment. Everyone just ‘knowing’ would be much better, but as the perfect(read; unreachable) solution to the problem, we can’t actually have that.

Perhaps being in an environment where many people do seek out information (in general) has blinded me from the fact that it is unreasonable. Good point.
