What's the Best Way to Combat This Kind of Rust?

I was planning on wire brushing And sanding, then rust converter, then primer and paint. Do I need the primer if it won’t be visible? Should I use bed liner instead? Clear coat?

Kinja'd!!!

Also for scale rust on a frame I was doing the above, except with bedliner. Does that sound right?

How thick do I need to go with rust converter? Is there something else I should use?

Wire brush, sand, converter, primer, paint. Then clear coat to add depth and protect paint. If you want it to get the extra protection of bedliner, skip the paint and clear coat. Don’t skip the primer. It helps the paint adhere to the metal.

Gotcha. I don’t think a primer is necessary for this. When you are done wire brushing and sanding make sure the surface has a rougher texture so the converter can grab.

FWIW I like the brush-on stuff a little better than spray on rust products, but it will probably be fine.

Equip the Antirust Crossmember. [+300] to rust resistance. Kinda hard to get, though. You gotta go to japan and kill the Dragon of Oxydization to get it, and he only procs once a year. Plus he’s pretty tough, so you’d need an elite guild of gearheads to have a shot at beating him.

There is no killing the dragon of oxidation. Only chasing.

Your plan sounds good to me. Don’t skip primer, it doesn’t add much time to the process and the repair will last longer

On rusty things I paint I use phosphoric acid, it’s watery, paint it on and let it dry. Then prime and paint. I’ve got a wagon and bike cart that live outside in the pnw. No problems after 5 or so years.

This is the stuff I use http://www.amazon.com/Ospho-Skyco-Su…

It’s cheaper at the local hardware.

I had rust behind my lights too. I cleaned with a dremel flap disc and hit it with some metal primer and colour. I only had a few spots though since I caught it early.

Looks like you should be fine to wire it and then paint.

Ok...definitive answer here:

1) Wire Wheel - Simple enough.

2) Rust converter - POR-15 works great, but most will do fine.

4) Primer - Almost any variety will do. Paint applied directly over rust converter will usually react and/or flake off with time. If you decide to forego the rust converter you must use self-etching primer on bare metal, and then normal primer.

5) Paint - You DON’T want to skip paint. Bare primer will absorb water and trap it. Paint will prevent this from happening. For the little extra money, just get a single stage color-matched rattle can.

Sorry for the long winded post. I promise this is the correct way to do it. Skip any of these steps and it will rot thru in the years to come.

Don’t forget to wear safety glasses when using the wire wheel. A friend of mine has an artificial lens in his left eye because he didn’t wear safety glasses. One of the wires came loose and got him.

I’ve been using this stuff from NAPA. Looks, smells and goes on like POR-15 without all the extra prep work. Just grind and clean up the area the best you can before you apply it. Then spray a crap load of oil or something over top just in case.

Also, POR-15 is not rust converter. It is simply a coating made to seal out the area so oxygen and moisture can’t get in to continue rusting process.
