...To figure out the fusebox. For the past year whenever a fuse blew, I just flipped it back. Since I have vacation all next week, I decided to figure out what each fuse does. Of course to do that, I need to find/discover all outlets to find what switch they go to.

I’ve only done one floor so far, the upstairs, and I already discovered two outlets I didn’t even know I had! They were hidden behind something else.

Orange is outlets, yellow is other; like phone line or an outlet for a washer and dryer. The arrows, or in some cases the ‘D’, indicate the direction of the outlet. It’s actually pretty interesting seeing how it’s all laid out. I wonder how the basement is going to turn out though...

I had to do this in my last house. Nothing seemed to make sense there either. I had a switch in the living room that controlled the light in the dining room and only half of the outlets in the living room. Weird crap like that.

Good luck with the basement!

I've never understood the logic of having switches control outlets...why? I know you can turn on lamps and whatnot, but isn't that why you have a ceiling light?

It’s usually because some cowboy added a spur off the wrong circuit, or something of that nature.

I did this last year. Labeled every outlet, and relates the breakers. Much easier to plan where to plug something in!

Lots of older houses didn’t have overhead lights, just switched outlets for lamps. Which is stupid.

How old are we talking here? This house was built in the ‘70s.

It was pretty common up until the 80’s, and even then it was not unheard of to have no, or at least not many, overhead lights.

I'm glad every room in mine does, :). Even three closets do!
