About a month or so ago when we featured bumper panel gap lines here on Design Details, several comments highlighted the odd gas filler cap on the newest Focus hatch. This design idiosyncrasy reminds us of the history of the fuel filler cap from the trunk fillers of yore to the iconic chrome racing cap. What are some great examples of these weird and interesting fuel filler doors?
Here is the Focus hatch’s neatly tucked gas flap...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And here is one of the iconic Caddy taillamp fillers...
So what do you think Oppo?
What are the best/worst/most interesting fuel filler doors?

That fuel filler as stupid as it is, was the reason I hated the face lifted focus. They just said change the front and back, keep it fresh! Then didn’t bother to make the door fit anymore. It sticks out like a sore thumb and reeks of laziness.

Yep. I always wondered about those...how much capacity do you have and can you fill them at the same time from two separate pumps? ;)

i really like the focus fuel door, its not just a circle.

Two 10 gallon tanks give me around 20 gallons total, and while
I
personally can not use two pumps because all the stations around me have too short of hoses it can be done.

safety aside, fuel filler behind the license plate is pretty awesome.

I love the one on my Trans Am. It is at the middle back so you can pull up to whatever pump you want, and the design flows with the taillights. The rear quarters are so clean and flow-y without a door built into them. Bonus: The bird badge on my door was a one year only feature. They don’t reproduce the gold Special Edition bird badges anymore (only about 3,200 were made originally) just grey normal ones, so if mine falls off, I’m screwed!

(Not mine but I can dream!)
Hidden behind the rear License Plate. I know, safety and bla bla. GM kept it in that spot for a while though. Into the late 80s on the G body.

The best ones were the ones behind the rear license plate.
The worst has to be my car now, since the door doesn’t completely close for some reason. The hinge is bent or something.

The 1980-1984 Renault Le Car has a really odd cap that looks normal until you unscrew it. From the outside it mounts flush with the bodywork - but the inside is at an angle for the fuel filler neck. So when you unscrew it, it does a sort of weird thing which is totally unexpected the first time.

I love the integration of the cover for the focus...but I’m biased. When I ended up at a full service station and it confused the guy haha

I like the Skoda fuel filler doors. With an ice scrapper, tyre pressure guide and fuel type.

My dad has one of these:
Not the car, just the taillight.

The hidden behind the license plate is the best place for a gas cap. and one of those awesome old car things that will never see production again.

I really like the design of the Focus ST’s fuel filler door.
The Singer one is one that comes to mind.
Even the regular 911s. What other car has a fuel filler door on the front fender?

Simply terrifying...

That’s right! I forgot about the Porsche front fillers that are on mid/rear engined models...I was fascinated by them as a kid...

Such a great use of space...it seems that Czech practicality is replacing Swedish sensibility over in Europe!

Awesome! So are there two fuel gauges then? I wonder why they didn’t just combine the two since 20 gallons is about the capacity of the one tank on our Odyssey...

Saab used to be known as the educated Mans car, the choice of professors, etc... now it’s Skoda. They did a survey of Superb owners (not me though) and found most of it’s owners were professors, mathematicians, scholars, etc... (generally very learned people) I don’t fall into any such category.

Beautiful car! I’m not usually one for American muscle but I can’t say I’m not jealous of that thing...

That’s interesting considering their brand image is still pretty low if I’m not mistaken...still, I’d totally rock a giant Superb wagon with a diesel and stick shift...complete with door umbrella holders!

The Skoda name is still derided in many minds like the old stigma for Volvo cars and old men in tweed jackets with elbow patches only Skodas was it’s unreliability.
It’s a varied brand. Fabia vRS drivers can quite often be ‘ass-hats’ who just want to race everyone, Yeti and Roomster owners tend to be a little older, Octavia owners tend to be quite young families who want value for money.

And Superbs are owned by sophisticated people who know that a Passat is overpriced and that their cars are superior anyway :D
![]() 10/09/2015 at 01:02 |

And that the Audi A6 is even more over priced than the Passat. ;)

There’s one gauge with two sending units that changes when you switch tanks. The desgin is a weird one because the tanks are tucked up in the rear fenders and the spare tire occupies the space that would normally be used by the gas tank.

Is that a tube for the gas going straight through the trunk? Reminds me of the Hoffman on Jalopnik yesterday... It seems like something I would break within a week of owning it because of things rolling around the trunk...doesn’t mean it isn’t cool though!

They were on B-bodies until the end.

But on the 2015 it doesn't match up with the tail light like on the earlier ones with the same body (they just changed the front and rear). Obviously done because cheap.
