Well it’s time for new prescription eye wear so I don’t pull a Mr. Magoo as a part of every second of the waking experience, and I need some advice and recommendations. I’ve researched the usual budget suspects - VisionWorks, America’s Best, blah blah and on - and come up with bupkis in terms of actually useable and relevant review information so I’m turning to Oppo for direct advice. I’m looking for transition lenses/UV protection and scratch resistance as priorities and comparisons.

Have a Target Optical in your area? We’ve had good luck there.

I’ve gotten mine from Costco in the past. I know that they at least offer transitions.

I just ordered a pair off of FramesDirect.com. I haven’t received them yet, so I can’t comment on quality/service, but they’re selection is crazy huge. They have deals going on for 40% off of lenses, and they offer transitions, scratch resistance, hydrophobic and oleophobic protection. You do need to see an eye doctor to get your prescription, though. They require proof of your prescription.

My girl gets her stuff from Warby Parker.

As someone who has had transition lenses before - I wouldn’t get them again. I found it to be sort of gimmicky and I swear that my glasses went from being clear to a bit “smoked” after several outdoor/indoor transitions. Also it takes a while for the transition effect to occur.

I got my last pair from VisionWorks and they sucked. It took them two tries to get the Rx sunglasses right, and I gave up on the bifocals and went back to my old pair. I have a friend who has spoken very highly of Zenni Optical , an online place. Super cheap, and he has been very happy. I have not tried it myself.

Do you have vision coverage on your health insurance? If so check to see which eyeglass places are in your network.

When you say “transition lenses” do you mean the kind that tint themselves in response to light, or progressive lenses, i.e. bifocals that blend the different prescriptions so they don’t actually look like bifocals?

I second Warby Parker. Get an exam somewhere and order from that site. I have gotten 6 pairs from them over the past few years. $95 bucks is pretty cheap for what you get.

Americas Best is...not the best. Zenni (online) and Warby Parker are okay, but not the best in terms of durability or quality of lenses (but they’re super, super cheap so they can be worth it).

Honestly my best glasses experience has been from Sam’s Club and Walmart, as much as I hate to admit it.

I’ve happily been using America’s Best for the last few years, and been satisfied with the 2-for-$100 deal. My prior eyewear places charged upwards of $200/pair.

Someone has probably mentioned Zenni, which my extended family likes

Costco. Good selection and first rate quality. Reasonable price.

I always splurge on glasses as they are pretty much a part of me. I order frames online to save a few pennies, but I get the lenses done at a local glasses shop, I have not had the best of luck with the big name stores.

I actually stopped getting the scratch resistant coating. I got something on my last pair of glasses (maybe washing the car or doing dishes) that ate away at the scratch resistant coating and made my glasses look like a pair of old cloudy headlights.

I spring for the thinnest and lightest lenses as cheap lenses with my prescription are sooo thick. Other than that I go for the “anti-glare” treatment for night time. Lenses are around $300. I have one pair of prescription sunglasses but the lenses were almost twice as much!

I ordered my last set from 39dollarglasses.com

My usual spectacles usually ran a few hundred per, i bought two pairs for, wait for it, $39 each.

Lots of styles, fast shipping and great customer service - one of my frames was warpes and I had the new (free) replacement in a few days

I was going to say this as well. Warby Parker all the way.

I have had surprisingly solid and inexpensive specs made by both Sam’s Club and Walmart the last few times. While they don’t have the wide selection that a dedicated eyeglass dealer has, they have all of the basic frame shapes to accommodate many face shapes, and some are the bendy-unbreakables (seriously the best feature ever) for good prices. Both places offer all the bells and whistles for lenses: transitions, scratch guard, and extra-thin/light polycarbonates for those of us who need Coke-bottle glass because we have near crippling astigmatism and myopia. (I think my current glasses weigh a third of the specs I wore back in high school.)

The last pair I bought at Walmart had the polycarbonates, transitions, and flexy-frames, and came out to almost $300 before insurance halved it. I don’t think I could have gotten a more expensive pair (short of Google Glass) except for buying a designer-name frame. But who seriously cares about a designer-name for specs? I have NEVER in my life heard someone say, “Those are Ralph Lauren frames, huh? I am going to get Kenneth Coles after my next eye exam!” Unless you’re getting flex frames, I don’t see how anyone can justify paying more than $100 for frames. :/

Great store, great selection, great prices, great customer service. I’ll probably get some sunglasses from them next summer.

If I needed glasses for vision I would definitely go there. My vision is pretty fantastic and I can make out words from very very far away but one of my Ex’s had glasses with a slight prescription (correction? I don’t know the term) and I put them on and I felt like a bionic man I didn’t think my vision could be any clearer but I was reading license plates from EXTREMELY far away, like easily 2-3 blocks away.

A bunch of my friends have gotten glasses there and speak very highly of them. So I went for a pair of sunglasses and was very impressed. My next pair of Rx glasses will definitely be coming from them as well.
