And it had to be in Brazil... An elderly couple was gunned down in Rio de Janeiro after they accidentaly entered a favela while on their way to a fancy restaurant in Niterói. Apparently they were following the instructions on their GPS unit, but the device completely ignored the existence of a warring favela smack dab in the middle of the quickest route. I can’t wait for autonomous cars to get to Brazil!

I saw that, that says a few things about how blindly people follow their GPS and how wonderful our country is. They were driving a C4 Lounge if I’m not mistaken.
That is why my Landy is armored and so will any next car I buy.

How much extra does it cost to get your car armored?

So, while I only understood about half of what you typed, how would an autonomous car changed the outcome any? The car would have taken the same route, I’m not sure what I’m missing.

Around $8k, but if you get a used armored car the premium over the normal version is not that high.

Is there a button in Waze for ‘war zone’?

Well, I guess that’s what I was missing.

Pretty much... Imagine relying on a self driving car in a country where taking a wrong corner or wandering into a bad area will most definitely get you killed. These favelas are poverty and crime ridden zones encrusted in the middle of large brazilian cities, and people, both locals and out of state, typically drive around them. A GPS guided car doesn’t know any better though, and if the most efficient route puts you right through a favela, that’s the route the autonomous car will take.

Mine isn’t, but since only criminals and construction workers drive Tipos nowadays, it blends right in!
