Why I take a neutral camber on stance

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! detailing his (ahem) position on the stance movement. I drafted a reply, but it became long enough that it should be its own post. It follows:

If you take his post, then change the subject from “stance” to “rods” around, change the picture and you’d be restating what was said in the 40s & 50s about the kids hot-rodding 32 fords. (So basically, if everything you said was different, it would be a different argument. I understand that this is a bad way to start. Hear me out please.)

Hotrods were worse in nearly every way (except for outright speed, dirt-cheap cost and the undeniable increase in ability to youth-in-eyes youngins) than new cars of the same era. Seriously, look at the deathtrap below. No current SCCA event would let that thing in the lot, much less race.

Kinja'd!!!

But the kids, they loved them, and about 1 on 1000 was pretty dang cool, faster, and better handling than a new car of that decade. Some of those guys (go Google !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) went on to do really cool stuff.

The people who drove them were not law-abiding citizens. They were hoodlums. (Granted, hoodlums from those decades can seem less scary than modern hoodlums, but the gradual increase in violent behavior is cross-cultural and a subject for another time) This is how they were portrayed by the “man”

If cursive writing on windshields is a problem, ask your grandma what she thought about kids repainting their cars to look like WWII fighter-planes. (Wait, you are still young enough have a grandma right? If not, I’m sorry about your Nan. Mine was freaking awesome. But she hated hot-rods)

Same thing here. Some of these cars are !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . MOST are !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (ones !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! are pointedly useless on purpose—solely self-expression with no presumed daily usefulness.) This is also true of bro-trucks, ricers, and [insert name of fringe automotive group here]. T here are cool cars of every stripe being built by folks who are making do with what they have or who are looking for something cool and different from the rest of their peers. Some of them would make cool weekend cars, but most would be miserable daily drivers...for a soccer mom in her mid 30s. They’d be hella-cool high-school cars. By which i mean much better than my sweet un-modified 71 4D Olds Omega in some brownish green with a browning-brownish-green vinyl top.

I’d daily-drive the heck out of the lightly-stanced 5 series at the top even if it hurts a little that it’s a classic E28. It’s well done. At least 8 out of 10. Would hoon.

Otherwise, I saw let them have their fun....unless they ruin a rare car stupidly...or drive a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Actually I have a bigger problem with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! than with “enthusiasts” of another stripe than mine....unless they are enthused about sportback-CUVs.....

Okay, why is the original linked post missing. Did shit happen again? -_-

Also, I’m not sure stance and hotrods can be compared so easily, but that’s just me.

I honestly believe that H20I brings out the worst of the stance crowd.

It’s totally gone now. Even from JKM7680 ’s feed. Weird.

Should we be checking in the impound yard at H2OI?

Thank you. I don’t understand why people feel the need so often to take such extreme positions on things that don’t affect them. It doesn’t have to be love/hate, you don’t have to support one thing or another and not loving or hating something doesn’t imply the inverse.

I don’t care for stance either, I skew toward practicality and performance, but it’s just someone else’s expression of self and it’s not my place to object to what they do.

I do however reserve the right to laugh as they scrape, get stuck or go on VWVortex complaining that they’ve busted their fifth oilpan.

I removed the post.

It was an opinion after all, but those are dead anyways. I’ve had horrible experience with people who stance their cars. I know of one person who doesn’t have a licence, insurance and is running plates that come back to a different car than the one they’re on. Yet he can still afford maximum camber and changing out his shitty wheels every once and a while on his POS Honda Civic.

And he’s not the only one like that out there. 38 arrests at H20I this year. How many arrests are made at errrr let’s say Woodward Dream Cruise? Three?

Also, I used to drive this. Here’s a picture just to give you an idea where it was sitting height wise.

I actually started to get into it, before realizing that I didn’t want to run with that crowd. I got tired of everybody telling me to roll my fenders and buy ugly wheels and I pretty much said fuck this.

I don’t like hot rods either. (well ones that are built purely for style and not performance)

I dont think you needed to remove the post. Like you said, it’s just an opinion but when you post siad opinion on the internet you have to be prepared to the inevitable arguments.

That person running without a license and stolen(?) plates is an idiot, but you’re gonna get that with any crowd, though likely moreso in those crowds trending for going people.

As EmbraceTheRasp said, this is mostly young kids doing what is cool, to them, much like hotrodding back in its day, and making do with what they’ve got, skewed priorities aside. The guys who do it well have the money to do so and with time things will continue to evolve. Stance may turn into an old school subculture like classic hotrodding has these days with big money put into fancy show cars that don’t see much of the road while others will go less extreme and drive their stanced cars.

If you want to be a part of it, cool, ignore the haters and embrace the style the way you want it to be. If not, also cool, let them be and as with most things, this too will pass.

I wish I could have read it before you took it down, but from what I am reading in the comments here I most likely would have agreed with you.

Also, if you have to slam on your brakes for bridge expansion joints and manhole covers.... something is wrong.

He probably got flamed and deleted it. I think the ‘Hey, it’s not for me, but live and let live’ mentality is held by the vast majority on Oppo, based on my observations.

Edit: Sorry, me dumb. Still not used to only seeing the author’s discussions at first.
