In my X-Type and pull into a gas station. The attendant (cuz Jersey) says to me after I give my card and ask for Premium “yeah, I know about these cars” is a surly manner. Kind of struck me as odd but let it slide.
Then after my car is full he hands me my card and asks me
Him:“so do like driving this?”
Me:”yeah”
Him:”Seriously?” - In a tone of voice normally equated with “seriously, you’re going to wear THAT?”
Me: “Yes, you got a problem with what I drive?”
Him:”uh... No”
I’m sorry me driving a 3.0 V6 40/60 AWD manual with sports suspension and bucket seats offends your delicate sensibility’s you stupid fucking cunt. I guarantee it’s probably nicer than what ever shit box he drives because I didn’t spend my 20’s smoking weed while trying to date rape high school girls, I actually made something of myself.

That’s a variation of the classic envious “I bet it breaks all the time, I’d never drive that”

how do you like it? I’ve been lusting after an XJ but am depressed over the non-existence of the manual version

Jealous? Why would he be jealous when he drives this ?

This has happened to me a few times in the BMW. My reply is always along the following lines..
“Guess what pal! Unless you don’t have a car I guarantee I paid less for this than whatever it is you drive”
Also FUCK not being able to pump your own gas, I feel your pain (cuz Oregon)
![]() 10/05/2015 at 20:40 |

I like it, 40/60 rear wheel bias and 5 speed make it fun to throw into the corners and the bucket seats hug you like a warm leatherly embrace.

Only way it could be better is if wagon. But even as is I’d drive your car in a heartbeat; even though it may be a Mondeo underneath, the Mondeos were always known for pretty nice handling especially for a family car. Good job on defending your ride.
![]() 10/05/2015 at 20:42 |

I cringe every time they put their full weight behind the pump and push it down...

Ford Mondeo thank you very much.
![]() 10/05/2015 at 20:45 |

Ugghh, and you feel your suspension actually freaking compress from the force they’re exerting...
And don’t get me started on how some of them just drop tethered gas caps so they whack straight into the quarter panel!

There are only a few benefits of living in Alabama. Being able to pump your own gas is one of them. Also, its $2.25.

I wanna take my XJ6 to NJ just to see if they’ll get confused by the dual tanks.
![]() 10/05/2015 at 20:49 |

Also I believe you have both 93+octane and E85? As an enthusiast of small displacement and occasionally turbocharged engine modification the 92 octane pisswater we get in Oregon sure does make my knock sensors sing a pretty song.

I almost got a wagon, but none of them were manual. I decided rowing your own was more important because I have my Landies for hauling stuff.

I feel like nothing will be able to fill the void of my WRX. right now we’re either selling my WRX or selling the WRX and the Escape and getting a Flex for my wife and I’m left carless until I pass all my ARE’s and get the bonus my boss has for me. then i’ll beable to get something. I really wanted an XJ but the xtype could be a runner up
![]() 10/05/2015 at 20:59 |

Well, consider me Jealous!
97 might even be enough to get my FR-S up to MBT timing. Best I can do around here is buy 104 octane unleaded race gas... for $9.00 per gallon :(

Eh, I’ve seen the leaping cats on XF’s and they just look out of place IMHO.

93 octane is common, I have seen 94 one time, and E85 is found in Birmingham, not the suburbs (where yours truly lives). There is only one problem with having 93 octane, it’s pretty pricey. At certain stations diesel is cheaper.

I get dickheads like that too. People in new fusion/accords/camrys, who’s cars cost twice as much as mine saying, “ wow must be nice having an expensive car” or asking me to buy their gas. Never mind getting let in at a intersection.

The X Type has really grown on me lately, and my Jaguar enthusiasm can best be summed up as “stodgy”. Your car in BRG with no chrome is probably the best looking one I’ve seen.
The S Type, however, is a loathsome caricature of a Jaguar.

lol funny rant. I used to have a green xtype just like that 2002 with the 17in wheels. Nice tan interior and green wood. The seats were awesome in that car. We got rid of it before I got my license. Its a shame I bet its awesome to drive

Reminds me of the time someone said “Wow, your Dad’s car is nice and awesome that he lets you drive it” at a gas station filling up my M3...Infuriating. Should of let it go but I went full douchebag and told him the title was in my name and my Dad was too afraid to drive it. (too afraid he’d buy one himself)
I've owned the M almost a year and a half and my pops STILL refuses to drive it.

without a doubt, might look at the wagon. My brother-in-law has already signed up to do a manual swap on an XJ with me. I just need an XJ, manual transmission, and to wake up from that dream

You can still get it as a dealer installed accessory - just not in Europe, because pedestrian safety.
However, I don’t think the current models were really designed to look good with it - kind of like modern Lincolns and Cadillacs with vinyl roofs.

If you go to certain places here you’ll find regular at $1.79 and premium at around $2.10.

Could be he’s a Jag snob, with five XJ6 sedans from the Carter and early Reagan eras surrounding his domicile. Maybe he howled in pain when Ford took it over, and went into hiding for a fortnight when Tata bought it. (Maybe a distant cousin or uncle of his way back when made that decision to make sure the XJ6 wouldn’t accommodate the Rover-centric 3.5 V-8.)
Bet you a [redacted, I would never gamble on the internet!] that the next time you’re there, his newly bought cream-white x-type is parked to the side of the building, he looks at you and then back at it and at you again sheepishly, shrugs. “I had to try it,” he’ll say. “You were right!”
Then he’ll rationalize after a couple minutes, “You know, I really like using it in inclement weather, you understand.”

Well. Those people can fuck themselves [anatomical suggestion redacted] silly.
You’ve got to get an additional “pedigree” vehicle for special occasions.
Something that looks very professional, a little butch-looking, a car that to all appearances Does Not Look Like Yours, and you must wear mirrored aviator sunglasses with delay-the-plane’s-takeoff quality stubble. And a Saddam Hussein mustache. The car will need extra power, I fear, but you’ll think of something.
No wait... Get something blocky and gnarly, something that apparently came to your possession by way of Albania and a knife-fight in a dark alley. Get it in stick, make sure the muffler is not functionally present, and play loud ethnic music of your choice. Have some shit hanging from the rear-view mirror, something that looks maybe not quite like a scimitar but close enough. Yeah...
And if anyone so much as looks at your hood ornament, you give them a look that melts a flat-screen TV while it’s still in its box, make sure they turn around and walk away before you nod brusquely and then polish your side-view mirror with a colorful handkerchief.

Have you driven an S-type? If so how would you say is compares you your X? I’ve only been up close and personal with an S-type and I just wasn’t that impressed... with any of it.
But The X could be, and should be much better, it sure as hell
looks
better.

Sure, they’re “training swords,” but when you pop the trunk and whip them out yelling in a blood-curdling fashion, they will not be about to make that distinction, I’d wager.

By the way, I am so NOT encouraging violence or pretending to violent intent or anything like that that could get you hurt arrested or killed, just so we’re absolutely clear. Do not take my gibberish seriously. I think we’re covered, at least for now. Good...

Interesting!
A practical reason in addition to aesthetic... Cool.
One of my neighbors has an x-type stick. I’ve yet to get around to giving some kind of articulate praise regarding that. I’m an antisocial douchebag shy.

I hate the fact that those gas station attendants are probably unionized, but as a new driver who is yet to fill up gas by myself, an attendant would be really nice. Good, low-wage employment opportunity, but I understand that most places can’t afford to pay attendants, and if there are attendants, price of gas goes up.
I was at Murphy (Walmart) with my dad, and it’s annoying to pump gas. Have to push in your zipcode, lift out the big, heavy pump, screw and unscrew the gas cap (which is hard), try to lock down heavy pump, put heavy, drippy pump back in holder.

You wouldn’t believe how many rough run and CEL conditions we get simply due to that pisswater, especially when they switch from summer to winter mix. If it were any worse I don’t think they would legally be able to call it gas.

In NJ, regular is down to $1.89, 93 is $2.27, so not pumping gas doesn’t exactly hurt the wallet.

I would have made some comment about his choice of employment. Especially since that’s not even a job anywhere else in the country.
![]() 10/06/2015 at 07:39 |

Not in NJ, the state mandates that gas stations have attendants because of “job creation” or what ever reason they like to use.

It’s not jealousy, it’s a false sense of superiority. Everyone’s guilty of it to some degree, for some people it’s just more blatant.

We have one of those at work, it is hard as fuck to park, bigger than a barn, and has a turning radius like the titanic. That being said it that is no excuse for that piss poor parking job.

Coincidentally (or, maybe based on this, because of the high number of page views), Doug wrote an article about gas station attendants in NJ. If there was one attendant for every one or two pumps, that would be nice. But again, paying the attendants, even if it’s minimum wage=higher gas prices. Factor on the likely unionization, and prices are probably super expensive.
It’s kind of like Publix. I don’t think Publix has a self checkout, the employees bag groceries for you, and they even take them out to your car. I love Publix; my mom doesn’t. Why? Because the same groceries are a lot more expensive than Walmart.
![]() 10/06/2015 at 18:45 |

Problem you run into though is that attendants bring nothing to the table. They’re mostly unskilled labor who will just as likely damage your car than anything
