Looking for a beater, but these are nice at $7k, anyone have any experience with a Jeep liberty..? Really like those extra lights..

We had one of this generation, I call them the bubble Liberties.
They can be built and done well into off roaders, light small wheel base.
They also can be shit. haha. We went through an ECU on ours, and that was about it. The alignments are ALWAYS off and they chew tires. Camber off on the rear wheels is very common.
3.7L V6 is ok in this one because it’s so light, makes a mess every time you do an oil change on them.
They aren’t fantastic but if you’re in that price range I highly recommend finding a Jeep XJ Cherokee, you’ll save money and have a MUCH better Jeep

I want the diesel version.

My fiancee really liked hers, but ended up giving up on it when it kept needing thousands of dollars of repairs to pass inspection each year. I enjoyed driving it when it worked right, but it was time for it to go.

My family had a 2006 one for 3 years (leased new). No issues with it mechanically, but it was cheap inside and out and the interior was designed by Fisher Price

Whoa! this came with a diesel? Didn’t know that.. Haven’t seen any for sale either..

My aunt had one and it was nothing but transmission issues. I would also agree on the XJ , I would take a Cherokee XJ Limited over a Liberty any day.
Heck I would take an XJ over the current Cherokee.

A friend of mine had one that had trouble with the transfer case, so he ended up just having it disconnected. I think he broke it due to abuse of the 4wd system. Otherwise, a good little car.

my cousin had its dodge version, the nitro and it was nothing but trouble he got it lemon lawed. I think its dumb to hold on to pre conceived sterotypes but dodge/jeep make really shitty cars. I would pass

I mean, if you want a vehicle marketed towards sorority girls and made at a time when Chrysler was putting out crap all around... sure.

Going by the brief amount of time I drove my aunts 01 Caravan, I cant figure how Chrysler got away with putting such cheap plastics in a car really..

Oh dear God no. I can tell when I get behind one of those without even needing to see the “CRD” badge because it accelerates away from the light at the same speed as tooth decay with little clouds of black smoke puffing out the back.

There is actually an aftermarket for these actually. They are a flash away from being adequately quick and fuel effecient. 10/10 would DD and explore with.

Yep, and yes in the states. They are kind of rare, but they are out there.

Definitely take an XJ over a Bubble Liberty.
As far as an XJ over the new Cherokee, well that depends on it’s purpose. If it’s a DD that commutes to work and back, the new Cherokee will do a better job. It’s nicer and gets way better mileage.
If it’s going to be used off road as well, than the XJ is by far a better option.

I drove one. I thought it was a gas engine with horrible problems at first.

Yep, its the 3.7 V6 that I’m looking at but not sure if I should get one and do some basic modification, I will be running it on some dirt roads with snow in the next few months.. I’m with you about the XJ, but good ones are hard to find, atleast ones that have less than 150K on the clock..

Actually, that is a good point.. They havent made good cars for a fair bit of time now..

If you like OEM roof lights, look for older Xterras. They're simple and largely bullet proof. Not to mention the 4wd is pretty stout.

No this is a terrible point.
This didn’t share the platform with the Nitro. The Nitro was the next generation and was a different platform and sometimes was a 4.0 V6 that was completely different from the 3.7.
I’m not pushing you towards a Bubble Jeep but I’m pushing you away from the notion that a Nitro and a first Gen Liberty are the same vehicle.

I think an XJ with 150k is better than a Liberty with 75k.
Seriously.
I mean like you said you need to find a non-rusty one with is the biggest issue. But the XJ is the better Jeep. BY FAR.
The 4.0 straight 6 in them is what every engine strives to be reliability wise. Cheap and easy to fix too.
