So my wife has had new-car-fever and I indulge her because I like to drive lots of different vehicles.
Since prices are starting to drop on VW Diesels because of the current kerfuffle, she has been looking at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Specifically, the one at CarMax in that link. It’s brown, has the panoramic roof, DSG, and tan vinyl.
Not this one, but identical.
Well... after running a payment calculator, it looks like the payments would go up by about $100. That’s on a five year loan with the 100k/$250 deductible MaxCare plan. Because she wants a warranty if she changes cars.
So this one’s a big fat NOPE.

You are aware demand will keep the prices up, right? Most people don’t *seem to* care about the whole mess and are keeping their cars. Anyone who sells theirs is going to get a good price because VW can’t sell the 2009-15 TDIs and isn’t selling the 2016s yet. So the people who want one are getting them private party (or through CarMax)
If I’m honest, it seems most of the people who are pissed at VW and are complaining that they should be fined and that diesel is evil aren’t actually TDI owners, or VW owners at all.

I have yet to meet anyone with a TDI who gives a rats ass about it. all of the enviro-hippies bought hybrids.
the ONLY ppl who give a shit are the ones who dont own it.

My dad has a Audi A3 TDI on it. and a buddy has a 2015 gold wagon TDI.
they dont give a shit. if anything, this will just get my dad to tune his car if the ‘re-map’ neuters power too much

Don’t buy a VW diesel without the extended warranty. Just in case you need injectors, or some kind of controller, and VW has closed up shop for good. Because everyone is saying VW isn’t going to survive this! (?)

I actually know at least two people who bought TDIs over hybrids for one reason—because they are eco hippies, but actually know how to read and saw that the diesels were an overall greener choice. Those people are pissed off now in a big way.

I’d be skeptical about calls that they will not survive. As far as I can tell it’s mostly a media and government frenzy. Even the people I know that are inclined to get worked up about this are not even mentioning it. If it gets a mention its just that an mention. To really harm a company the size of VW customers need to leave en mass and I don’t see that happening. Plus any damage is likely to be mostly to VW it self. I doubt Porsche owners will stop buying Porsches because of the VW diesels. Audi might be close enough, but I doubt it will get hurt too much. Skoda, and SEAT are not likely to be harmed since they are not even sold in the US. I doubt it will hurt sales in Asia, and that’s a big market for VW. Europe it could but I suspect any fall out will mostly be in the US.

No worries, I do not believe they will have any survival issues due to this. I’m just sayin... “Everybody” is saying it!

We work close to each other and the same schedule so our only car is a ‘13 Soul with 52k miles. She had a b6 Passat and loved it but it was a moneypit. Also we are trying to pay off debt we accrued when she was out of work for six months last year due to an illness and some other issues.
We drive 80 miles or more every work day and then usually another 100 or so on the weekends. Fuel efficiency, hatchback, reliability, and good seats are important to her. The Kia’s seats aren’t so great and my fat ass isn’t helping matters. Extra foam compression, you know?
So we are casually shopping until we find something we either can’t live without or the Kia has a major issue.

What a great way to save! Having one car to fill up, pay insurance on, maintain, sounds like printing money. I’m not well-leaned on Kias in general, but Souls are really convenient and I think their six-speed is very smooth (I’m guessing you have the CVT though?). Yeah, the jury is still out on longevity and reliability but the facts are it’s the last one standing as the Element (as originally conceived), Cube, and xB are all gone, so they have something going for sure.

No cvt for the soul. Ours is a six speed manual with the 1.6. The other option was the 6 speed auto. We were maybe looking at a 15 soul but the one she wants (panoramic roof is only in plus and exclaim models) is upwards of 25k. We don’t need a $450 car payment.
