We decided to get after the two ancient, mostly dead bushes in front of the house today. And I found out why the lopping shears I bought a few years ago were so inexpensive. Hollow aluminum tube + 10 years old + lots of leverage = sheared metal. Had to go buy some more, then came home and cracked the wooden handle on my spade. Got the stumps out, though, and it looks a lot better. Not sure what we’ll plant in their place.

Plant something green, leafy, and low to the ground. Is that like a reading or breakfast nook?

It looks 100% better! How about some flowers? Whatever you decide, don’t let it grow very tall........you have a lovely home that you don’t want to cover up.

Dining area in the kitchen. Actually, it’s where we take all our meals. We have no proper dining room.

It has to be something hearty. Our house faces south, and we get TONS of hot afternoon sunlight on that side of the house (see the grass for an example).

A nursery would know what to plant.

My wife and I were just discussing that. There’s a nice private nursery near us (not Home Depot). We would like something that will flower and attact hummingbirds or butterflies, but is also low maintenance and drought tolerant.

That looks waaaay better!

Toss some Dwarf Prairie Grass and some native Wildflowers up there. Low maintenance and easy to control.

Thanks. You know the house comes with a 30-year mortgage, right?

Well, that’s the cost of doing business. The house looks great.

It is. Another lesson learned about cheap tools. Much of the time, they’re just fine. That one time, though, when you really tax them, you’ll be happy you bought quality tools.

I once bought a cheap pair of loppers. I broke a blade on my first use. For warranty, they sent me a new blade - the wrong size. Twice. I threw them out and bought a nice set, which I still have.
