Stefan Bellof. Sliding through the turns during the rainy Monaco made famous by Senna’s breakout performance. Despite the fact that if it ran the distance, Bellof here would have caught and passed Senna. He was that much faster. Things like this convince me. Senna wasn’t the greatest driver , he just worked harder and was a better student. He became a better champion driver. I seriously doubt Senna could have bested Bellof’s ‘83 Ring record of 6m 11s. I don’t think anyone else has.

His Ring record should stand for all time.

They said he took massively big risks but they also said he could do that knowing whatever happened he could easily gather it all up again. That has to be the ring record reason. Nobody else had balls that capable .

Too bad he died there but those attending have said he wouldn’t have tried that outside eau rouge pass on Ickx if he didn’t know it would work. It wasn’t just a big risk. it was super calculated.

Skilled and unfathomably brave. Senna was my racing hero as a kid, but I wish I had understood what Bellof was doing. I was too young to see it at the time.

It’s why I imagined a world where Stefan, Ayrton, and Gilles are racing in one or more seasons.
