When we were pregnant with our first, we chose not to find out the gender. Same with me the only boy with the last name is my brother and I. My brother and his wife tried to have kids unsuccessfully for 6 years. They ending up adopting 2 kids, a brother and sister (age 6 & 7) and they kept their own family name.
