I’m in need of a portable laptop that can stand the abuse of frequently moved about, so I’ve been looking at Thinkpad T400 with the 2.8 ghz T9600 processor...thoughts?

If you want one that can really take some abuse, look at a Toughbook .

I have phased out 200 of these lately and they are still pretty stout little laptops. Add an 850 Pro SSD from Samsung and some PC3-12800 DDR3 Memory and you are keeping up with just about everything else consumer based out there.

My W540 has been great other than the super terrible trackpad. Since the T400 doesn’t appear to have that problem, fill your boots.

I’d advise you to get something newer... C2D laptops are showing their age.
Look at a T410 for similar price.

Look at HP EliteBook 8440p as well, those are solid.

Lenovo makes pretty great stuff, espcially for the price. Id have no problem buying a ThinkPad

Solid buggers, but I reckon HP Elitebooks are at least as solid, so consider them too if there are any decent spec ones in your budget. Add an SSD and either should run until it’s completely obsolete or the end of time, whichever comes first.
Try a 6930p, if you can find a good one. Get one with the highest spec processor you can find, max out the ram, add the SSD and it’s more than powerful enough for everyday use.

Whatever you get, make sure it has an SSD. I’m still disappointed that the default config on so many systems doesn’t use SSD.

I have a spare ssd from my last laptop so I'm good.

Do you mind being spied on by the Chinese (Lenovo’s installed built-in spyware) and the Americans?
Or were these made when IBM was american?

I’m buying it with No OS and using Windows 7 on it. So just NSA.

I think I read that Lenovo rigged the BIOS or something within the chipset to automatically re-install their suite of softwares, in case you format the computer hard drive.

If you want to move about I recommend the X series, look for an 201, similar price range and you’ll get a first gen i5 or put a little more money and get a X220, I’m on my third thinkpad (4 counting the one I got for my mother) and my experience has been great, they’re really well built machines (military grage testing or something) and the generation you’re looking at has the beautiful old style 7 rows keyboard, I updated my x220 to a x220 tablet instead of a x230 because I don’t want that new keyboard. The only problem with my thinkpads is that now I can’t have a trackpointless laptop, so other than HP elitebooks, thinkpad is all I have.
And by the way I’m running MacOS Yosemite and Windows 8.1 on my x220, the best of both worlds.

Lenovo’s spying shit affects much newer machines... and not ThinkPads anyways.

I've decided on a Elitebook 8470,, which leaves off on where the Thinkpad left off.

ThinkPads are awesome. I’d get one just because they’re cool but I need a small, low-power fanless laptop.

I considered the 8440p, but realized the limits of it, and then discovered a cosmetically damaged 8470w at the highest possible spec (i7, 8 gb ram, upgradable to 16 gb, Windows 10, 1gb VRAM) runs at the same price. (200 dollars) when I receive it, a Mac OS X dual boot will commence

I’ve been thinking about the Thinkpads, and ever since the T60 they’ve faltered from the enterprise level overengineering to committee diplomatic neutering of the brand, tossing away the magnesium top roll cage, the titanium lids, the RUBBERIZED PAINT, nice keyboard, the stiffness of the keyboard, hinges, screen, the touchpad, and reducing it to another blip on lenovo’s playbook as a relabeled ideapad
