First things first: no, it's not technically a beta. It's actually a soft launch, only available in the Taiwanese and Dutch App Stores. Using black magic, I was able to download the Dutch version onto my iPad Mini 2 and play it.

Playing this 'beta' can be hard. Mainly, this is because I have NO IDEA WHAT THE GAME IS TELLING ME. As far as I've been able to tell, there is no way to change the language, and the Dutch App Store does not list English as a supported language (yet). On the bright side, I have picked up a few Dutch words. Hoera!

Being a beta, Need For Speed: No Limits dose not always run smoothly. It occasionally crashes and lags, but that's why developers use soft launches: to iron out the bugs.

From what I can tell about the Dutch storyline, the plot involves slowing beating crew members and rising the ranks in this underground racing scene. It's kinda comparable to CSR Racing. Also like CSR Racing, NFS:NL is free and charges for gas. Your tank can hold 6 gas 'units', and each race takes at least one. That's totally not gonna get old.

The gameplay itself isn't half bad, and in typical Need For Speed fashion, drifting is the way to go. Races can get a bit repetitive, but the tracks and cars should be enough to keep me playing.

The car list so far is, let's just say, far from impressive. At this moment, only 10 cars are in the game. Ten. T-E-N. Compared to Real Racing 3's 105 cars and Asphalt 8's 60+. At least the 10 cars are a good 10 to have: an E36 BMW M3, a BMW M4, a Ford Fiesta ST, a Ford Mustang GT, a Mazda RX-7, a Nissan Skyline R32, the Toyobaru twins, a 993 Porsche 911, a Golf GTI and a Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

Another problem is that, during races on the iPad, the game does not support Retina screens. Therefore, the gameplay looks like like it's from 2010. If they don't change that before the worldwide release, major points will be lost.

Lastly, the one thing NFS junkies have been waiting for: CUSTOMIZATION! Finally! You can finally change stuff! For each car, you may change your paint, spoilers, body kits, wheels, hoods, and more!

Kinja'd!!!

Being a beta, it's hard to judge this game. It has quite a few faults, although many should be fixed before the actual release. But for a mobile game, it's pretty much what can be expected from good old EA.

the fact that you pay for "fuel" is dumb, yet people wonder why games nowadays suck.

I could've done this joke more easily with small screen shots instead of 3 comments, but I'm lazy.

Ah, the old play-for-5-minutes-wait-an-hour free-to-play experience. I've been grinding through Real Racing 3 and EA had a slightly better model for it but it's still a pain in the ass.

In RR3 you pay in-game money for repairs and car wear is largely based on how many miles you cover between repairs. Unfortunately once you get up into the high-quality cars, you're waiting 3-5 hours for the repairs. And of course you can pay real cash to skip all that.

It's a shame because RR3 is at the verge of being a competent race sim. It has a great selection of licensed cars and tracks, good graphics considering the platform, and the physics are ok. They could easily put out a Forza or Gran Turismo competitor on the consoles. Follow the Forza model: release for $60 then nickel and dime people for DLC cars.

But no... The F2P model is too lucrative. Fucking Game of War is making sure we're all fucked by that model now.

yup. I got it too! Didn't know it was in the Taiwanese App Store, I can speak and read Chinese, so that may help.

Only problem is that I don't want to uninstall the game because the tutorials are so annoying.
