Pinewood derby season. National colors on a flowing whale/fish shape. Gulf colors on a teardrop.

Kinja'd!!!

Streamlined shapes. Boundary layer air. Flow separation. All that good stuff.

Keep you comments fresh. I'll be sharing them with my kids.

My kids did 80% of the sawing. All the filing. About 50% of the sanding (boredom set in)

I routed the edges ( only power tool involved) and spray painted. G-man did the orange vinyl and i did the white. I also did the white rally stripes.

Having done these long ago, I'd love to be able to take another crack at it using the computer design tools I have access to now haha. Optimize that Cd!

When I did pinewood derby my favorite cars were my "Jaguar limousine" which did resemble and XJ stretched out, and a ferrari F40. My Ferrari F40 ended up getting like 2nd or 3rd and I did the wood cutting myself for the shape of the car and the spoiler.

My only crime was that I painted it metallic blue because I was in third grade.....But at the same time I pretty much slept with that car as a stuffed animal. It was just too awesome to see my F40 beating all the generic wedges and whatnot at the time.

Just last night i posted that some kind had super heros. Some kids has sports heros. I had Yellow Bird and the F40 and the GT40.

It sounds like you and I are cut from the same cloth.

I slept with pictures of the Porsche 959 above my bed. It could do no wrong. It won Dakar, it competed at Le Mans but blew apart its own tires because it was too fast for tire technology. It was my superman.

Right. Kid.

We did Lego First robotics this winter and some of the robots are gawky and slow and built by kids. Some where flawless and concise and built by dads. The best part was watching WHO carried them across the gym floor. it sure want the kids!

Now I have a desire to play with derby cars. And I'm adult. I was never super good at them as a kid but then arts and crafts was never my strong point. These look totally awesome though your kids are way more talented than I ever was.

I'm not saying I wasn't involved, but I'm proud of them. My dad kind of phoned it in. I drew the profile and he took it work and cut it on the band saw, brought it home for me to paint.

I spent time explaining how to use a coping saw, how to watch the cut lines on both sides of the work, how to hold the saw, we kind of did it all. It was a good sunday. They sure enjoyed filing more than sanding though.

I think you did well then. Practical knowledge is good in the real world. I'll never forget the day in construction when I saw a kid trying to sit on a 2x4 and cut it with a sawzall. Proper tool usage goes a long way haha.

To the kids: You all did a good job, I don't care what Drakkon says about you.

To Drakkon: after reading your other comments, it sounds like you did a great job keeping the kids involved and not letting that "my kids gotta win so I'm going to do everything and just let them put the numbers on it" mentality take over. Good job.

I think I still have most of my pinewood derby cars. Some turned out pretty cool. Others not so much.

Awesome. Nice going! Beautiful cars.

We used the tips in this video to build a car that won several heats:

I'm not saying we did anything in the videos. I'm going more for process than a win. They're big. The weight is in the mid to front of the car. We filed the axles, but did not polish them. I'm tiling a bathroom for god's sake. How much time should I be spending on this.

Nice work. And appropriate color choices.

Here's my rigs, circa 1979-80. Modeled after Nuvolari's Alfa, and its rival Mercedes Silver Arrows. I'd just read this book . True to history - the Alfa got first, and the Merc got 2nd. I didn't know that I was Jalop at the time.
