I found a double offender on instagram.

Kinja'd!!!

Why would you think this looks good? If you need a front plate, you're much better off with just the one you need...

Maybe they're Spanish immigrants?

I've got nothing. Why would you have a Spanish front plate on your US based Volvo?

Because this person is most likely lives in los angeles, and has no idea that there's a difference between different plates from different European countries. The previous car they owned was a stanced Honda accorcivicalude or similar vw golf, but that didn't have enough street cred at the local fart cannon/curb clearing competition.

I have a pair of plates from Berlin, Germany. I swapped a couple of my old US plates for them. I lived in Berlin, MA at the time, so it was funny. But I haven't owned a German car to put them on since then. I may or may not be interested in temporarily attaching them to my current car during hypothetical motorsport activities which may or may not void a hypothetical warranty...

god damn i hate euro front plates on cars in the US, seems like the most pretentious crap you could ever do.

This is so terrible btw

It's beyond terrible. I just cannot fathom what would be going through this guy's head as he attached his CA plate over the euro plate.

I can't either, let's just kill it with fire.

Here's the real kicker, though. He has plenty of pictures with the car like this, and then did a complete R trim conversion. Guess what plates he kept? None of them. The front bumper is plateless. Not complaining, just confused as hell.

isn't the front required there?

I can't imagine intentionally running an illegal car, why deal with the hassle.

I have no clue, but knowing California, probably.

I would say 'maybe he moved', but it's the same garage...

yea garage looks the same. you sure he didn't buy a new car? I'm shocked he'd swap everything and paint.

Yeah I'm perplexed by his project choice as well. At current 850 depreciation, it has to be cheaper and easier to go buy the one you want.

NOTHING MAKES SENSE.

That's our biggest mistake.

Trying to pretend anything this guy does is logical.

One possible explanation: in countries where the plates stay with the car for life (I'm mainly familiar with the UK), sometimes the plates are glued on – after all, they're never going to be removed. I don't know what the rules in Spain are, but if the car (or just the front bumper – it's obviously not original to the car) came from there, maybe plate was glued on and the owner didn't bother trying to remove it.

That doesn't make it much less ridiculous. I have no issue at all with front plates, and prefer the look of unadorned EU-style plates over the silly graphics on US plates – if I could (legally) use EU plates in the US, I would. However, I still think that the idea of putting an unrelated EU plate on your car just to 'look cool' is phenomenally dumb.

The worst ones are the "German" licenseplates with words on them like "IMSOCÜL." They need to be punched.

Haha I don't think I've ever seen one of those. That is horrible.
