Went to check that my "new" snowblower was ready for the blizzard last night, started it up and let it run, and the motor ran fine for a bit, then made some loud noises and died. Took a lot of fighting to get it to start, and it ran poorly while making a loud banging noise in the crankcase. Ran for about 30sec and died again, all attempts to restart got me the same thing.

So I think something in the engine just fubared itself, the night before what is being described as a "potentially historic" blizzard. Fortunately I just called Harbor Freight, and they have a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in stock.

Looks like I'll be doing an engine swap tonight...

If you're sure it's in the crankcase, I'd think it was a rod, except for the part where it won't run right. Typically if it's throwing a rod, it'll just keep running until it trashes itself utterly - ask me how I know. Ran poorly + banging is a bit of an odd combo, short of absolutely nightmarish detonation with some other things going on.

It'll run, but not well and die after around 30sec. My suspicion is the rod combined with old tired engine is just too much to want to keep running.

I had a Fuji/Robin 11hp water pump engine that flat refused to keep running due to (among other things) valve seat recession. Once it got warm and kept running, a very faint tap started, got much louder, and BANG - rod through the side of the block, with bits of crankcase and cap literally flying through my hair close enough to leave an oil slick. ALL of my nope.
