And understated luxury (No it is not a Mondeo, go away)

Yeah! And my Volvo S80's not a Ford Five Hundred!

No it is not, I wish I got one when I had the chance, biturbo and only 20k miles, god that was a nice car.
![]() 01/20/2015 at 12:42 |

It's a Mondeo, only somehow even less reliable.
![]() 01/20/2015 at 12:42 |

Edit: I though you were talking about the XJ8. The X-Type is turrible.

And an F-type are things of radically awesome sex and similar activities of said nature.

I've always loved the X-Type. Such a good looking little car and despite the Mondeo underpinnings, I've always asked "what's wrong with a Mondeo?".
![]() 01/20/2015 at 12:49 |

Fine, it's not a Mondeo...It's a Contour!!
:p
![]() 01/20/2015 at 12:49 |

Unlike the Jag being a Mondeo, the S80 isn't actually a Five Hundred.
![]() 01/20/2015 at 12:50 |

The X-Type is as turrible as the mods
![]() 01/20/2015 at 12:51 |

Or a Lincoln MKT...
![]() 01/20/2015 at 12:52 |
|
Well at least in that case the S80 came first, and the Ford version of the platform was cheap-ified.
![]() 01/20/2015 at 12:53 |

was the mondeo the contour in the US?

In the mid-2000s, I was riding with a friend of mine who was a Jaguar mechanic, in an S Type he had been working on. At one point while talking about the car, he pointed at a button on the console and asked, "Know what it says under that button?"
"What?"
"Fuckin' Ford!"
That always stuck with me. I really wanted an X Type when I was 25, but after hearing his commentary about that generation of Jaguars, my opinion was forever changed.

40/60 bias AWD, 5 speed manual and sports suspension is bad?
YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU'RE TALKING TO ME!
![]() 01/20/2015 at 13:01 |

It's a Ford Contour with Jaguar XJ parts. Also, I would argue that 5-speed manuals are economy transmissions and aren't as sporty as they used to be. BOOSH!

The Mods got rid of bewbs and dissenting opinions so they are right turrible. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go use big words and post about you oppressing me in Cigar Lounge. Good day sir!

Correct. It a Ford Escort. Oh wait that's the s type. My bad.

No, the S-type was the Lincoln LS.

It's absolutely fantastic if you love exploding centre diffs though!

I do like a good explosion that could kill me. ;)

Great car, fantastic interior, but I am so many levels of not a fan of the external looks. It looks like a SLIGHTLY updated XJ8 (so it looks like a car from 1999 at the latest) and the hood treatment/headlights remind me of this monstrosity:
![]() 01/20/2015 at 13:52 |

I have an unnatural love for these. V6, stick, AWD, and dat opulence... also, they're almost free.
DISCLAIMER: I also loved the Contour. Had one. Loved it. Even broken, which was it's natural state.

I've come around on the X-Type a little bit. Jaguar crammed as much Jaguarliness (it's a word, look it up) as they could into the platform given their constraints. I don't think I would call it a thing of beauty, but it's pretty obviously a Jaguar, and it isn't this:
Where the X-Type was an attempt by Jaguar to get into a segment they really needed to be in, the S-Type is a parody of a Jaguar. It's what some Chinese start-up company would build if they wanted you to look at a car and say "hey, that looks like some Chinese start-up company wanted me to look at a car and say 'hey, that has a grill like an old Jaguar...how ugly.'"
You could probably even argue that the S-Type possessed more inward Jaguarliness than the X-Type, but LOOK AT IT! It's an insult to the Mark 2, one of the world's first real modern style sport sedans.
Long story short (too late): I'm not yet a fan of the X-Type, but I loathe the S-Type.

As I recall, something like 30% of the components were shared with the Mondeo, so it was certainly a much less egregious case of platform sharing than, say, the Lincoln MKX/Ford Edge or Chevy Suburban/Cadillac Escalade.
There was actually more commonality between the S-Type and LS.

I always thought the shrunken XJ proportions never quite worked - kind of had a modern day Hudson Jet vibe to it - but it was always a very well trimmed car for the money. Gorgeous interiors and an excellent value on the used market.

I think it was 20%, but I'm just trying to get Thebloody's goat.
![]() 01/20/2015 at 15:12 |

Gotcha, I knew it was somewhere in that range. I remember that the breakeven point on the car was stupidly high, since Ford hadn't saved anywhere near as much as money as they planned because of all the changes.

I found one in good condition except for a slipping transmission. Guy only wants $1200. Seriously thinking about it for LeMons. One of my teammates is a transmission guy. Anyone ever had one on a track?
![]() 01/20/2015 at 20:54 |

NO IT IS NOT
![]() 01/20/2015 at 20:54 |

What's wrong with the Mondeo in the first place?
![]() 01/20/2015 at 20:55 |

I understand, but I don't mind the S-Type, it always was a handsome car for me.
![]() 01/20/2015 at 20:55 |

Fully agree
![]() 01/20/2015 at 20:56 |

Me too, one day I might one, but I sorta love the S-Type even more.

But the Mitsuoka is soooooo ugly

Exactly.

I liked the S-Type when it came out. It fit with the whole retro trend of the time. Unfortunately, it has not aged very well.
