Earlier last week, I asked Oppo to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for which car should be my mom's next daily driver. I mentioned a very-OPPO-approved car to her jokingly, but yesterday, she actually went in for a test drive!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The car in question is a 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR in Cosmic Pearl Blue like the one pictured below:

Kinja'd!!!

I wasn't present at the test drive since I am still at school. But here is a summary of her thoughts of the car:

What she liked:

- The acceleration: She said it was the quickest car she had ever driven.

- The braking responsiveness.

- Exterior styling: Okay I know this one's debatable here on Oppo, but I agree with her that the Evo is a very good looking car even though this generation has been around since 2008.

What she said was "tolerable":

- The ride: I wasn't there on the test drive, but from what I can imagine, this thing with its sport suspension must be pretty rough to sit in. Nonetheless, she said it was "tolerable" so that's a good sign.

What she didn't like:

- "The interior is crap."

- The rear seats don't fold down.

- The trunk/boot is small.

- "The interior is seriously worse than the interior in our CR-V. How are they charging $37K for a car with this interior?"

Overall, my mom likes certain aspects of the car, but is unsure if it's the right car for her due to the practicality and build quality. However, she still hasn't ruled out the possibility of buying one (fingers crossed). She's going to visit a Volvo and a Subaru dealership next weekend.

...But I really want her to get this one. I want to know more about this car before I go in to see it. Right now, I don't know very much about Evo X MRs, except that they're fast and they have some high-tech center diff. Does anyone on Oppo have any experience with Mitsu's/Lancers/Evos? Are they reliable and relatively inexpensive to maintain compared to other cars in the price range? Convince my mom this is a good/bad idea.

Thanks Oppo

I wouldnt go for it. for a daily, at that price, the person who said that interior is ok should be shot. even in a base lancer its better, because you know you arent paying 35+K for it. that, and they like fuel. and the expensive stuff.

did you mention the idea of a lexus Is? if she likes the speed, she can try a IS350 on for size

Personally I question how much time Mitsubishi has before they die off in the US.

The IS250 AWD is pretty high up on her list, probably one of her top choices right now.

Which isn't a bad thing. I really don't want her to end up with a Q5 or a MDX or something, but in the end, it's her decision. Just hoping the Evo would win since it's the most exciting car on her list.

The high end evo- aka the cla45 amg.

Faster, more comfortable, and just squeezing by the 45k limit.

Yeah, even though I want her to get an exciting car (which I'll get to drive), I just want her to have something safe, reliable, cheap to maintain, and anything less beige than a Camry.

Not so sure about the maintenance and running costs on those...

2006-2007 Volvo XC70. Does everything. It's a fast (even compared to an R) highway cruiser with comfy seats, loads of practicality, decent fuel economy (25 highway 22 around town) and it's reliable. A little old (I know) but it does it all. I'd say a newer XC70 but I know nothing about them really. They swapped the 5T for a Ford SI6... There seem to be many that have already crept past 150k miles. Find a T6 one... I hear the 3.2 is slow. Or an S80 V8 AWD, same car but in sedan with a V8!

350s were fine in terms of excitement, sure, you wont be pulling handbrakes turns (UGH DAM FOOT PARKING BRAKE) they can still get out of their own way fairly quick. and they can make GLORIOUS V6 NOISE.

besides. MUCH rather would get a non exciting car because frankly, all of the things that make a car "exciting" (hard suspension, brutal gear boxes, etc etc) are (usually) a pain in the ass for the day-to-day commute.

if you want excitment, you drop 2 wheels and get yourself a motorcycle.

No it wouldn't be a bad decision. Volvo makes some amazing machines

That might not be a bad idea, I used to work at a Lexus dealer and I can say that they're nice cars. Although the 250 is slow, especially after testing an Evo. Not everyone likes the interior of the new IS though, it's polarizing and most of our customers said it felt small even the ones who owned the last generation IS

I drive a Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart. 2.0T and trans from the Evo x, AWD from the Evo IX. It's a good DD if you're a 20something like me, and like to pretend you're a rally car driver. The rear seats in my car fold, I thought the Evo's would too. I always thought the trunk was alright. It's not like a CR-V, but I've been able to haul everything from a full set of tires, to 2x4's.

Reliable? Uh. I tend to get a lot of recall envelopes from Mitsu, though, I haven't had a problem (and I've driven my car HARD. Like, really hard for a good 40k miles, and it hasn't broken down). The stories I've heard from others paint a picture of extreme unreliability especially with the twin clutch transmission (TC-SST). Inexpensive to maintain? Nope. Pretty damn expensive. Fuel thristy too. 93 premium at least, and even with these cheap gas prices in NJ, 3/4's of a tank (9ish gallons), costs me like 30+ dollars each time. When gas prices were higher, it was at least 45 dollars every 2 days (I drive 30+ miles each day to get to work, and 30 miles back home).

Maybe suggest and S60 R-design? 325 horsepower/354 lb ft torque and a gorgeous interior. It's fast and AWD and not enormous. It's also quite a looker!

benz has pretty solid maintenance and warranty with their new cars. as in 2 years all maintenance. so your running costs would be gas.

havent been in an amg cla, but the non amg clas are not that luxe. not what you get in the other mb models, even the c-class.
