For a Totally Reasonable $220K, You Can Have This VW Type 2 Limo         + the Business That Owns It

I really like Type 2s. A common daydream for me involves the barn-find of an original 21 or 23-window or truck. I can't explain in words my desire for a first generation Type 2 double-cab truck. If I had the money, I'd have a fleet of them.

Then there's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinja'd!!!

First generation VW Bus/Van/Type 2 values have been stratospheric for a while now, so it's no surprise to see nice examples pulling high asking prices. With the exception of a few outliers, a non-camper 21-window Type 2 can easily fall within the $30K-50K range. Lately, they've been climbing in to the near !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which seems !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The Buy it now price on this VW van is $220,000. You read that right.

$220,000.

While I'm sure that a lot of work went into it, and yes, it does tickle my fancy, I can't imagine paying that much, even if I were ridiculously wealthy.

Anyway, let's forget about the astronomical price and gaze lustfully at it.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I have to admit that the color combination looks great to me. The medium-range wood and tobacco interior looks fantastic.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Somehow, I suppose the little dual-port is going to push this thing. I imagine a fully-laden 0-60 E.T. would be measured in hours.

Kinja'd!!!

ETA: As user !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! points out, the $220K Buy It now price tag is for the bus AND the limousine business that owns it. I'm not sure what the value of a limousine license in Maui is, but it's a good catch.

At that point, you're better off with a Magirus-Deutz bus. More power, still air-cooled, diesel, roomier, roofline windows (more than the VW), and vast amounts cheaper.

Being that it's not at the very least powered by some sort of subaru boxer engine, this thing is crackpipe. You'd take an extra few hours to get where you were going becuase the original bus was underpowered, adding extra body and people to it would only make it worse. You'd need everyone to get out and push up a hill instead of the old reverse up a steep grade trick.

That is one of the more awesome things I've ever seen. If I won a huge lottery or something, I could see buying it. But, being a normal guy who only makes the medium bucks, CP. Also, that engine would make it a CP even at a lower price.

I'm not sure this is worth as much as one of the buses used to create it, let alone both of them plus labor.

Lets see...

I can pretend, for a moment, that $100k is a reasonable price for someone to pay for an early bus. I cannot, however, pretend that it's reasonable to cut up 2 $100k buses to duplicate this, and then to expect that money back out of it.

Looks like a well done conversion cosmetically. Motor is a little anemic. One question: What is the fascination with limos? Arrive in a limo, you don't look important, you look like a tool. I would much rather spend the limo rental money to rent an exotic car and go for a sweet drive with a good friend than a roll to some event with a bunch of a-holes you'd rather leave stranded in the ghetto.

You have no evidence whatsoever that CleverUsername is "stealing" content in any way, as there is no uniqueness present here other than the same topic. The BiN is actually for the bus and the seller's limo business together:

"The listing price for the company and the vehicle is $220,000. I will also consider selling just the vehicle separate from the company if you are not interested in owning a fully-licensed limousine company in Maui"

Not sure what it will cost sans company, but as others have said, despite the quality of the work, I don't think customization should yield a return over the original value.

This guy lives up the street from my best friend. He also has a normal bus and is quoted by my friend as "rather crazy" and "looks pretty cash strapped now".

The last 10-15 years on Maui, especially West Maui, has seen a crazy amount of residential development when they shut down the cane mills and pineapple fields. Houses popped up everywhere that once fostered sugar cane crops on the hills around Lahainatown. With that came a shitload of Californians, terrible, awful, disposable income people who wanted boutique shops and set up lame vanity businesses (like a VW Bus Limo company) that only a few tourists think are neat. A lot of those places folded and since most of these people bought $3mil 2,000sqft houses at the peak of the housing bubble and after investing in failed vanity project business that "would do so well here because they worked in Malibu" they're looking to get liquid again. It's bounced back a bit in the last year or two there's just very, very little interest in crap like this.

Locals hate it.

Best guess is that this bus might've been hacked up from two more cheaper end trims and then modded like this. There is supposedly a concern in the VW community about taking lower trim models and then "hacking it up" to be the more desired models (the ones with the shit-ton of windows like the ones that command wads of Benjamin's.)

They're a cool little van, but, they wouldn't sell more than a few as Americans by and large don't live the outdoor lifestyle that the Europeans do. When we do, we can't do it without a huge camper trailer and everything we own brought alone. Of course, some of us can get high quality online service and do it, but, we're a very small minority. That vehicle, taken care of, would last you the rest of your life.

That thing would need a Porsche 993 Twin Turbocharged engine with robust little turbos (no lag), and low-end-torque tuned cams to push a 28-window Limo like that, loaded down with passengers...
