My girlfriend and I picked up our rental car in Switzerland today. We were supposed to get a manual VW Golf, but they didn't have one, although we could have an automatic upgrade for free. I said that we really wanted a manual, and she told me she would look for one since we reserved it. She ended up finding a most Jalop ride for us. Can anybody guess the car from the shifter?

Kinja'd!!!

We're in our chalet airbnb right now, and most of the good pictures are locked up on SD cards at the moment. Definitely posting a photo/video dump of this gorgeous journey that I've had the pleasure of spending with my favorite person and a delightful car. Goodnight from Grächen Oppo!

Since it says 4x4 you are clearly driving a Fiat Panda.

is that an auto-stop/start button? is that what that feature is called? where the car turns itself off when youre at a stop light?

Yes it is. First time I've ever driven with one, and it's scared the crap out of me a few times. If you stall the car though, it will start the motor back up by itself when you press down the clutch. Nifty!

strange... how does it work with a manual?

you brake to a stop while not in gear.

the motor turns off.

you want to start up again... so to put in first, you need to depress the clutch pedal.

upon pressing the clutch pedal, the motor fires up again?

i guess that would explain your stall comment above too. and probably gets it done quicker than having to cycle through the ignition switch again.

anyway, i still have no idea what kind of car that is... but my guess is something like a 1 series with x drive? is that even 4x4?

Yep, it works pretty much exactly like that. Much quicker on the stalls since the motor is pretty much running by the time you've got the clutch all the down. This car isn't quite as fancy as a 1 series, although that would be fun!

Too tall! The commenters seem to have narrowed it down to the VW family, but there's a big blind spot nobody is guessing…

It's that I'm pretty sure! I thought it was a Yeti one at first, But the "4x4" is at the top.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! The correct is a Skoda Octavia. A diesel manual wagon to be exact.

Correct assumption. The car has been successfully identified as a Skoda Octavia!

The shift pattern told me it was a VW of some kind (got the same on the Passat), the 4x4 lettering told me it was definitely not a VW (not premium enough...). And it's not a SEAT as you said in response to an other comment, so it's a Skoda. The dash and the center console, as well as the shifter's shape are a perfect match for an Octavia.

Thought it was a Scout (because it's writtent 4x4), but after looking on the Octavia Scout, it's written "Scout" and not 4x4.

After many searches, finally found it on Skoda's swiss website. It's an Octavia Combi 4x4 , couldn't find it on their French one 'cause we don't get it here.

It could only be more jalop if it was brown. Is it?

Well, it could be a Miata haha. Sadly, it is not brown but a decently attractive gray.
