...but it went to the 2nd page after finally publishing it. Did I do something wrong for future reference?

Kinja has returned to a previous evil of publishing the post with the time of when you started writing, not when you hit publish. It did that for a while, quit, and has started again. You need to adjust the little publish-time thingy to whatever the current time is.

I think you can reshare it, without any added text, for a future time and it will show up on the FP of Oppo.

When you begin writing a post, there's a time stamp for publishing on the bottom left I think. You probably started writing it at 11:13am when you finished, because you started at 11:13am, it posted to 11:13am. Go edit your story, change the published time, and repost.
Edit: sorry, it's top-left in your edit page, and I just set it for 12:50pm.

did you save it as a draft? then publish it?
if you did, then it goes to the time that you saved the draft, not when you published it, to get it to come up the front page of oppo, copy and paste everything from that story into another post, but just directly publish the post, do not save it as a draft then publish it.
I found this out the hard way, so I always just publish my posts, I never save them as drafts.

yeah I did. I'm at work and was using my phone, and since my browser constantly refreshes I made sure to save it often.

Yeah, I learned this the hard way myself. I never save drafts anymore. I write the content of my larger pieces in Word, and crop and prepare my images in advance. Only when I'm done writing do I compose a new post and stick it all here, with whatever minor last minute revisions.
That's how I do it, at least, but there's no one right way. This post, for instance, I just typed on my phone.
