Maybe they saw the GT launch and scrapped it. I wouldn't blame 'em, there was some stiff competition.

Still, he has to show it sometime, and he can't wait till Los Angeles, since they've already stated the CT6 goes on sale in December.
That leaves Chicago in February or New York in April, unless they chose to unveil it in China first - which might not be such a bad idea.
At any rate, not doing it in Detroit was a smart move - the CT6 would have risked getting lost in the shuffle among the GT, NSX, and Avenir. Doing it somewhere else allows it to grab a greater share of the spotlight.

lets not forget the amount of time it takes to build a set and do all the brochures and stuff for these launches, i doubt this was planned for detroit at all.
